Most garage door repairs fall between $89 for a safety inspection and $900 for heavy-duty springs or a new belt-drive opener. Springs, cables, an off-track door, rollers and sensors each have their own range, shown below. The final price is confirmed after we see the door, because weight and damage change it.
Quick answers
How much does it cost to repair a garage door?
Our ranges run from $89 for a safety inspection to $900 for heavy-duty springs or a belt-drive opener. Springs, cables, off-track repair and rollers each have their own range in the table above.
How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?
It depends on the part. A torsion spring pair is $250 to $450, a cable pair is $175 to $350 and an off-track repair is $175 to $450. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What should garage door repair cost?
It should match the parts and labor the quote lists. Ask for each part by name and the total in writing, and compare more than one estimate.
Why do two quotes for the same repair differ?
Door weight, spring size, parts and what the quote includes all change it. A lower quote may leave out a part or the second spring.

What repairs cost
These are our price ranges for common garage door work. They are our ranges, not a state average, and they do not claim that Illinois costs more or less than any other state.
| Repair | Price range | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| 12-point safety inspection | $89 | Springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener checked |
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door | $250 to $450 | Door weight and size |
| One torsion spring | $180 to $300 | We usually replace both, because the second spring is the same age |
| Heavy-duty torsion springs for heavy, wood or oversized doors | $350 to $900 | Door weight, spring wire size and cycle rating |
| Extension springs, pair | $150 to $300 | Spring length and safety cables |
| Lift cable replacement, pair | $175 to $350 | Door weight and cable length |
| Off-track door repair | $175 to $450 | Bent tracks, damaged panels or rollers |
| Rollers (set), sensors or tune-up | $150 to $350 | Number of rollers, sensor type and door size |
| Belt-drive opener with battery backup, installed | $550 to $900 | Horsepower, smart features, door size |
| Opener installation labor only | $150 to $450 | Opener type, and wall-mount units take longer |

What changes the price
Door weight is the biggest factor for springs and cables. A heavy wood or insulated door needs stronger springs than a light single-layer steel door. Size matters too, since a two-car door needs more of everything than a single.
Damage changes the work. A cable that snapped can also bend a drum or a bracket, and a door that came off its track may have bent sections. Parts such as sensors, rollers and drums are quoted by type. Access matters for wall-mount openers and for tight garages.
What a good quote lists
- Each part by name and size, such as the springs, the cables and the rollers.
- Labor for each task and any trip or diagnosis charge.
- What the repair covers and what it does not.
- The total, and the date the price is good to.
The Illinois Attorney General advises getting more than one estimate, in writing. For work that crosses the law's threshold, the contract should name the contractor, describe the work, state the dates and total cost, and set out the payment schedule. Be careful of requests for cash or for full payment before the job is done.
Repair or replace
If the door is sound and only a part has worn, repair is usually the better value. A new door is worth pricing when several sections are damaged, the model is discontinued, or repairs keep coming back. See new garage doors for door ranges, and spring repair and opener repair for part-by-part work.
Safety first
Torsion springs and lift cables hold the weight of the door under tension. Do not try to adjust, wind or remove them. If a spring or cable has broken, or the door is crooked or heavy, stop using it and call a technician.
Two jobs that look small, a sensor and a roller, are safe to price over the phone. A broken spring or a cable under tension is not a repair to start without training.
