How Much Does a New Garage Door Cost in Illinois?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 5 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

An insulated steel 16x7 door costs $1,800 to $3,600 installed, and a non-insulated steel door of that size costs $1,400 to $2,400. A single 9x7 steel door is $1,100 to $2,200. Carriage house, wood, modern and glass doors cost more. Size, insulation, windows, color and special orders move the price, and we confirm it after we measure.

What moves the price up or down

  • Size: a 16x7 door costs more than a 9x7 door because it has more panels and more hardware
  • Insulation: an insulated door costs more than a single-layer steel door
  • Windows: glass adds cost, and insulated glass is a separate upgrade
  • Color and finish: custom colors, wood stains and powder coats are extras
  • Special orders: a custom size or design adds 20% to 40% and takes longer

Add-ons are priced separately from the door. An insulated glass upgrade adds $400 to $1,200, and a custom color adds $300 to $1,200. A custom size or special order adds 20% to 40%, and the lead time is 4 to 8 weeks.

What insulation costs and what it gives you

Insulation is the largest choice after size. Clopay, a door manufacturer, says doors with polystyrene insulation are typically in the R-6 to R-10 range, and polyurethane-insulated doors can reach R-12 to R-18. Polyurethane doors usually cost more, which is why the insulated steel price range is wide.

R-value is not the whole picture. DASMA, the industry association, explains that the number is calculated for one door section, while a tested U-factor describes the complete installed door, with its joints, stiles, thermal breaks and seals. The two are not reciprocals and cannot be compared. If you want a door for a heated or attached garage, ask for the tested U-factor when the maker publishes one. For the full explanation see R-value for Illinois garages.

What the installed price includes

  1. Measuring the opening and checking the headroom and side room
  2. The door, tracks, hinges, rollers and springs for that door
  3. Taking down the old door
  4. Installation, balancing and testing the door, and the opener connection if you have one
  5. A written quote that lists the model, size, color and any extras

Ask whether a new opener is needed. A heavier insulated door can call for a stronger opener, and a worn one is a good thing to replace at the same time.

Permits and neighborhood rules

Rules differ from one city or village to the next, and homeowner associations often control the door style and color. Check your city building department and your HOA documents before you order, so the door you choose is allowed. We can give you the door size, the style and the color for the paperwork.

Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when

  • The damage is limited to one section, a spring or a cable
  • The panels are straight and the door runs smoothly
  • The model is still available for a matching part

Replace makes sense when

  • Several panels are dented, creased or rotted
  • The door is out of balance again and again
  • You want better insulation or a different look

Questions people ask

How much does a new garage door cost?

An insulated steel 16x7 door is $1,800 to $3,600 installed, and a non-insulated steel door of that size is $1,400 to $2,400. Carriage house, wood, modern and glass doors cost more.

How much do garage door installers cost?

Installation is included in the door prices above. If you only need an opener installed, the labor is a separate job; see our opener installation cost post.

How long does it take to install a new garage door?

It depends on the door and the opening. We confirm the schedule when we measure. A custom size or special order has a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks before installation.

Is an insulated garage door worth it?

It depends on the garage. Clopay says the savings are most noticeable when the garage is attached to the house, and polyurethane doors reach higher R-values than polystyrene ones.
