Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review
Emil Garage Doors are my GO TO business for all things related to garage door repair, replacement and door openers! Talk about the gold standard for superb professional courteous responsive customer service - these guys are always on time, their rates are very reasonable and IMO lowest in town, and their work is always quality - from spring replacements to extra FOB programming & delivery! The owner is the real deal and makes good on all promises - We love doing business with him and don't hesitate to refer this business to all. He's that good!Ryan · Google review
Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review

Mostly 1970s to 2000s housing, with a median build year of 1989
According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, Normal has about 22,215 housing units with a median year built of 1989. About 20 percent were built in the 1970s, about 18 percent in the 1990s and about 21 percent in the 2000s; only about 11 percent date from before 1960. Doors and openers from the 1970s and 1980s are due for a second set of springs, while newer homes mostly call about sensors, remotes and opener boards.
About 47 percent of Normal's homes are single-family detached houses, about 36 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 55 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Illinois State University, founded in 1857, shapes the town. We could not verify any homeowners' association rules, so if your door belongs to a landlord, a board or an association, tell us who to talk to.
Tell us what the door does and how old the house is, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance the door before choosing springs, so the new set fits the door you really have.
- Second sets of springs on 1970s and 1980s doors

What Normal weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's Normal 4NE station table (1991-2020 normals) gives a January average high of 33.4 degrees and low of 15.6, a July high of 86, a record low of minus 24, about 39 inches of precipitation and 20 inches of snow a year. Hard freezes stiffen grease and weatherstripping, load the opener and can finish off a spring that is already near the end of its cycles.
The Weather Service's list for January 30, 2019 shows Normal at a low of minus 21 degrees and a coldest high of minus 3, and says not all of the data are official. Its reports for August 10, 2020 describe a large tree uprooted onto two homes near the Constitution Trail in Normal and a 51 mph gust at Illinois State University. We could not verify Normal outage figures.
Before winter, clean the sensors at the bottom of each track and wipe the weatherstripping. If the door sticks on a frozen morning, free the seal first, then use the opener.
- Clear ice from the bottom seal in winter
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Know where the manual release is

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Normal
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
Town permits and contractor registration. Normal is an incorporated town with its own government. The Inspections Department is at 1 Uptown Circle, phone 309-454-9581, with the Town Hall line at 309-454-2444, on normalil.gov. The town's forms page lists homeowner permit applications for residential building, demolition, electrical, HVAC and plumbing work, and contractor registration applications for general, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and sign contractors. It does not say when a permit is needed and does not mention garage doors, doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a replacement door or an opener swap needs a permit or which registration applies. Ask the department before the work.
State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of professions has no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state license for garage door work. Under the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act (815 ILCS 513), home repair or remodeling over $1,000 needs a signed written contract or work order; maintenance, service or repairs under $500 are left out of the Act. Illinois has no statewide building code, so permit rules are set city by city.

Normal garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Normal?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Normal (ZIP 61761) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Normal?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Normal?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Normal?
Normal's street ZIP code is 61761, according to a Census overlay of the town; 61790 is Illinois State University's own code. Call us if your address is near Bloomington and you are not sure we reach it.
Does a garage door replacement in Normal need a permit?
The town's forms page lists building and electrical permit applications but does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the Inspections Department at 309-454-9581 before the work, especially if the job changes the opening or adds wiring.
Do you repair garage doors after a storm in Normal?
Yes. Strong wind can bend a track or push a door off its rollers, and a fallen limb can dent panels. We check the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before any work starts.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a sensor, a roller or a loose bracket. Springs and cables hold a great deal of tension and need a trained technician, so please do not try to adjust them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
