Garage Door Opener Installation Cost in Illinois

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

A belt-drive opener with battery backup costs $550 to $900 installed, and a wall-mount (jackshaft) opener costs $900 to $1,400 installed. Installation labor alone, when you already own the opener, is $150 to $450. Wall-mount units take longer. Door size, headroom, wiring and smart features change the price, and we confirm it after we see the door.

What an opener costs installed

These are the prices we use for Illinois homes. The final price is confirmed after we see the door and the garage ceiling.

Belt drive or wall mount

A belt-drive opener sits on a rail in the middle of the ceiling and pulls the door with a belt. A wall-mount, or jackshaft, opener mounts beside the door spring and turns the torsion bar directly. LiftMaster, a leading opener maker, says its wall-mount design frees up space in the garage.

That matters if the ceiling is used for storage or a lift, or if the garage ceiling is high. A wall-mount unit costs more and takes more time to install because it connects to the door's torsion assembly and needs power at the wall. It is a good choice for anyone who wants the ceiling clear, but ask whether it fits your door and track type.

What the price includes

  • The opener, rail or mounting hardware, and the wall button
  • Safety sensors at the bottom of the door and the wiring to them
  • Setting the travel and force limits and testing the door reverses
  • Programming remotes and keypads
  • Taking down the old opener

Ask whether a battery backup is included. LiftMaster says battery backup keeps access working in a power loss, which is useful in Illinois when a storm takes out the power and the car is inside.

Safety sensors are not optional

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission requires residential openers manufactured on or after January 1, 1993 to have one of two entrapment protection features: an external device such as an electric eye or a door edge sensor, or a constant-contact control where you hold the button until the door closes. A new opener will have them. An old opener may not.

Do not bypass a sensor

If the sensors blink or the door will not close, check that they are clean and aimed at each other. Never disconnect a sensor or tape it over to make the door close.

Quick answers

How much does garage door opener installation cost?

A belt-drive opener with battery backup is $550 to $900 installed, and a wall-mount opener is $900 to $1,400 installed. Labor only is $150 to $450.

How much does it cost to install a garage door opener I already bought?

Labor only is $150 to $450. Wall-mount openers take longer, so they are at the higher end.

Does a new opener come with safety sensors?

Yes. Federal rules from the Consumer Product Safety Commission require openers made since January 1, 1993 to have entrapment protection, such as an electric eye.

Should I repair or replace my opener?

Check the door balance first. If the door is hard to lift by hand, fix the springs or cables. An old opener that still runs smoothly may only need a repair.

Check the door before you buy an opener

A new opener cannot fix a door that is out of balance. DASMA says a spring that does not match the door can shorten the life of the door and its motor. If the door is hard to lift by hand, or a spring or cable is worn, repair it first. See spring repair and opener repair. An older opener with a bad logic board or gear may be cheaper to repair than to replace; a technician can tell you which.

What a quote should list

  1. Opener make and model, and the drive type
  2. Wall-mount or ceiling-mount, and the headroom it needs
  3. Battery backup, Wi-Fi and smart features
  4. Number of remotes, keypads and sensors included
  5. Total price, and any extra work found when the old opener comes down

Compare quotes line by line. Two prices for the same job can hide different openers. For a related cost, see garage door repair cost in Illinois.
