What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

A village of older homes, with a historic district
According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, La Grange has about 6,196 housing units with a median year built of 1953. About 36 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, about 45 percent before 1950 and about 64 percent before 1960. Doors on these homes have usually been replaced at least once, and many have older openers, tracks and springs that have been repaired over the years.
About 68 percent of the village's homes are single-family detached houses and about 9 percent are in buildings of 2 to 4 units, and about 82 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Wikipedia says the La Grange Village Historic District holds more than 1,000 late 19th and early 20th century buildings, some designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. We could not verify any rule on garage doors in the district, so ask the Village before you change a door's look.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What your garage door is telling you in La Grange
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A torsion spring snapped | Replace both springs and balance the door |
| The door shakes or scrapes going up | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose track bolts | Replace rollers, tighten the track and lubricate |
| The door stops partway and reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors and reset the force |
| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener and test the safety reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What La Grange weather does to a garage door
La Grange has no station table of its own. We use the Downers Grove table on Wikipedia, about 8 miles west, which credits the Weather Channel and does not name a station: a January average high of 32 degrees and low of 14, a July high of 87 and low of 63, and about 38 inches of precipitation a year, with a record low of minus 26 in January 1985. It is a stand-in, not a La Grange reading. Cold stiffens grease and weatherstripping, loads the opener, and can break a spring that has many cycles on it.
Chicago fell to minus 23 degrees in the January 2019 polar vortex, the coldest in 34 years, according to the National Weather Service. News reports on the August 10, 2020 derecho said about 180,000 of the first roughly half-million ComEd outages were in Cook County. The Village's permit pages mention a sewer backup prevention grant and a flood control permit fee waiver, but we could not verify how often garages flood. Know where your manual release is.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After heavy rain, check the bottom seal and the base of the track for water and grit.

Opener safety, permits and design rules in La Grange
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. La Grange is an incorporated village with its own government. Its Community Development Department is at Village Hall, 53 S. La Grange Road; the permit phone is 708-579-2320, the email is permits@lagrangeil.gov and the website is lagrangeil.gov. The Village's permit guide lists replacing windows or doors of the same size under work that needs no permit, and says a permit is needed if the original size changes. It does not name garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work, because the Village charges a double fee for work done without a required permit. It also asks contractors to register each year, online, with bond and insurance requirements that vary by contractor type.
State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions has a roofing contractor category but no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state garage door contractor license. The Illinois Attorney General's home repair page says the contractor should present the Home Repair Consumer Rights document for work valued at $1,000 or more, and that you have three business days to cancel a contract that was sold and signed at your home.

La Grange garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in La Grange?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in La Grange (ZIP 60525) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in La Grange?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in La Grange?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in La Grange?
La Grange's standard ZIP code is 60525. La Grange Park, a separate village next door, uses 60526, according to third-party ZIP lists. Call us if your address is near La Grange Park, Countryside or Western Springs and you are not sure we reach it.
Do you service older garage doors in La Grange?
Yes. About two in three La Grange homes were built before 1960, according to Census estimates, so many doors have been replaced and many openers are old. We weigh and balance the door and explain what we find before we quote.
Is La Grange the same as La Grange Park?
No. La Grange and La Grange Park are two separate villages with their own governments and permit offices. This page covers La Grange, ZIP 60525.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
