Capes, colonials and a handful of apartment buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Abington has about 6,500 housing units and the median home was built in 1970. About 63 percent are detached houses, about 11 percent are two-, three- or four-unit buildings and about 18 percent are in buildings of five or more units. About three in four households own their home. A 1970s door and opener is often on its second set of springs or ready for one.
Wikipedia says Abington was first settled by Europeans in 1668 and incorporated in 1712, that Rockland and Whitman split off in 1874 and 1875, and that its shoe factories supplied much of the Union Army's footwear. Island Grove Park, Ames Nowell State Park and the North Abington Depot are local landmarks. We could not confirm neighborhood names or any rule on garage doors in older parts of town, so ask the town if yours is an old house.
Tell us your street and whether the garage is attached or detached, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener and test the safety reverse |

Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review

What Abington weather does to a garage door
Abington has no weather table of its own that we could verify, so these are regional figures from Boston Logan Airport, about 20 miles away. The 1991-2020 normals show a July mean daily high near 82 degrees, a January mean daily low near 23, about 44 inches of precipitation and about 49 inches of snow a year. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping, and road salt corrodes tracks and hardware.
On January 28, 2025, a windstorm left about 25,700 Massachusetts customers without power at midday, and NBC Boston named Abington and Whitman as the areas hit hardest. When the power is out, the opener will not lift the door, so know where your manual release is and how to use it safely.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter
- Know where the manual release is
- Clear ice from the bottom seal

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Abington
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Abington's Building Department is in Town Hall at 500 Gliniewicz Way ((781) 982-2105). It issues building, electrical, gas and plumbing permits and enforces the state code and the town's by-laws. The page does not mention doors or garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work at abingtonma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and requires contractors to be registered. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit but does not mention garage doors. An opener circuit may fall under electrical permits, which the department also issues; we could not confirm it.

Abington garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Abington?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Abington (ZIP 02351) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Abington?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Abington?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Abington?
Abington has one street ZIP code, 02351. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Abington require a permit to replace a garage door?
We could not confirm it. The Building Department page does not mention garage doors, so call (781) 982-2105 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
What should I do if the power goes out and my garage door will not open?
Use the manual release cord to disconnect the door from the opener, then lift it by hand if it is balanced. If it feels heavy or will not stay up, a spring is probably worn, so stop and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
