Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. What Chicopee weather does to a garage door
The nearest published normals, from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, give a January mean low near 19 degrees, a July mean high near 85 and about 52 inches of snow a year. A local TV station put the Westover Air Reserve Base season snowfall near 50 inches, and we treat that as approximate. Deep cold stiffens the lubricant on springs and cables, and ice can glue a bottom seal to the slab.
Road salt eats at tracks, rollers and hinges through the winter. The October 2011 nor'easter dropped heavy wet snow on leafy trees and knocked out power across Hampden County. During an outage the opener does not run, so know where your manual release cord is and how to use it.
In late fall and again in spring, wipe salt off the tracks and bottom seal, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. If the door is frozen to the ground, do not force it with the opener.
