An old mill city of single-family houses, two-family homes and apartment buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Fitchburg has about 17,700 housing units and the median home was built in 1950. About 42 percent are detached single-family houses, about 31 percent are in two- to four-unit buildings and about 54 percent of households own their home. Older doors on older garages are common, and some are narrow or non-standard sizes.
Wikipedia calls Fitchburg a 19th-century industrial center on the Nashua River, with mills that made machines, tools, clothing, paper and firearms, and lists neighborhoods such as Cleghorn, The Patch, Tar Hill, Waite's Corner and North Fitchburg. The National Register lists Monument Park, Crocker Field, Moran Square and other districts, and the city's Historical Commission reviews exterior changes in the Monument Park Local Historic District. We could not confirm that its review reaches garage doors, so ask first if your home is there.
Tell us your street and whether the door belongs to a house or a multi-family building, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

What Fitchburg weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's Fitchburg climate table, from Fitchburg Municipal Airport 1998-2020 normals (National Weather Service), gives a July mean daily high of 83.9 degrees, a January mean daily low of 16.9, a record low of minus 15, about 44 inches of precipitation and about 71 inches of snow a year. Cold below about 15 degrees stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping.
Snow and ice build up on the bottom seal, and road salt corrodes tracks and hinges. Local accounts describe Fitchburg residents going without power for days after the December 2008 ice storm, and on September 11, 2023 the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Emergency for Leominster, Fitchburg and Lunenburg. If the power fails the opener cannot lift the door, so find the manual release before the storm, not during it.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter
- Check the bottom seal for ice
- Know where the manual release is

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Fitchburg
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Fitchburg is a city with its own Building & Zoning Department at City Hall, 718 Main Street (phone 978-829-1880, weekdays 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the city's page). The city prefers building, plumbing and gas permit applications through its online portal and still accepts paper ones. Its page does not mention doors, garage doors or windows, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Call the department before the work or visit fitchburgma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit, but it does not mention garage doors, so the answer from the city or town is the one that counts. Homes in the Monument Park Local Historic District may need Historical Commission approval for exterior architectural features.

Fitchburg garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Fitchburg?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Fitchburg (ZIP 01420) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Fitchburg?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Fitchburg?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Fitchburg?
Fitchburg has one street ZIP code, 01420. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Fitchburg require a permit to replace a garage door?
Fitchburg's Building & Zoning page lists building, plumbing, gas and wiring permits but does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the department at 978-829-1880 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors in the Monument Park historic district?
We can repair springs, cables, rollers and openers on any door. Exterior changes in the Monument Park Local Historic District are reviewed by the city's Historical Commission, so ask the city before you replace a door there.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
