Snow that slides off a roof can land on the driveway in front of the garage door, pack against the panels and freeze the bottom seal to the slab. Clear it by hand from the ground, keep people and cars out of the drop zone, and do not run the opener against a packed or frozen door. If the door scrapes or hangs crooked, stop.
How roof snow ends up at the door
A pitched roof over a garage sheds snow in sheets. When the sun warms the roof or the temperature swings, the layer under the snow melts and the whole slab can let go at once. It lands on the driveway or against the door, often with a layer of ice in it.
University of Minnesota Extension notes that sliding snow and ice can injure anything below and advises clearing the area before snow comes off a roof. That applies to the space in front of your garage as much as to a barn.

What a pile of snow does to the door
Snow packed against the panels adds weight and pressure to the bottom section. It can also push into the bottom seal and the lower track. When meltwater runs under the door and refreezes, the seal bonds to the slab.
Garaga warns that water pooling under a door can freeze and make it stick, which strains the electric opener. An opener forced against a frozen door can strip a gear or pull the door off the track, so a door that does not move on the first try should be freed, not driven.
Clear snow without hurting the door
- Work from the ground and use a plastic shovel near the door, not a metal blade that cuts the seal.
- Clear a path wider than the door so new snow does not slump back against it.
- Free the bottom edge by hand before you press the button.
- Keep children, pets and cars out of the area below the roof edge while snow is coming off.
- Do not chip ice off the bottom seal with a hard tool; let it thaw or warm the area.
The same extension page recommends tools that work from the ground and warns against heavy scraping or chipping at ice, because it can damage the surface. It also notes that heavy snow followed by a cold snap can increase the load, so keep checking.
Warning signs to act on
A door that scrapes, jerks, hangs crooked or feels heavy is no longer safe to run. Do not adjust a spring or a cable yourself and do not keep pressing the button. Disconnect the opener with the release handle only when the door is closed, and call a technician.
A packed or frozen door can also bend a section or knock rollers out of the track, so look at both sides of the door once it is free. A new gap, a dent or a roller that sits out of line means the door needs a look.
Reduce the problem before next winter
Ask a roofer whether a snow-retention system makes sense over your garage, since the right layout depends on the roof. Keep gutters and the roof edge clear so meltwater drains away from the door, and make sure the driveway slopes away from the garage.
Check the bottom seal each fall. A cracked, dried-out or droopy seal lets water in, and Garaga advises cleaning it and using a silicone-based lubricant, not petroleum oil, which breaks down the rubber. See garage door repair if the seal or the door sits poorly.

Questions people ask
Can snow from the roof damage a garage door?
It can. Sliding snow and ice add weight and impact, pack against the panels and track, and can leave the bottom seal frozen to the slab.
Why won't my garage door open after a snowfall?
Packed snow, ice under the bottom seal or a frozen slab edge are the usual causes. Free the bottom edge by hand before using the opener.
Is it safe to chip ice off the door?
Avoid hard tools. Chipping can cut the seal or dent the panel. Clear loose snow by hand and let ice thaw.
Should I use salt to melt ice at the door?
No. Garaga says never to put salt under the door, because it damages the concrete and the rubber seal.
