Short answer

South Shore and southeastern Massachusetts doors take nor'easter wind, storm surge near the water and a cold, wet winter. Check the bottom seal and tracks before winter, look for rust on the panels in spring, learn the release handle before a power cut and leave springs and cables to a technician. Ask your town and HOA about rules.

Weather on the south side of Boston

NOAA's state climate summary says winter lows are near 30°F near the coast, snowfall is lighter toward the Cape (under 20 inches a year on Cape Cod) and average annual precipitation across Massachusetts is about 45 to 55 inches. The summary does not give separate figures for Braintree, Brockton, Taunton or Fall River, so treat it as the state pattern.

Nor'easters, storm surge and sea level

NOAA describes nor'easters as cold-season coastal storms with heavy precipitation, strong winds and coastal flooding. A nor'easter in October 2021 brought 60 to 90 mph winds on the coast, and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 caused record storm tides and coastal flooding. Sea level rose about 7 inches from 1970 to 2020 and NOAA projects more. A door at street level near the water faces wind, wet and debris. See nor'easters and your garage door.

Salt, rust and the wash

Salt from the road in winter and spray near the water can leave residue on a door. Clopay suggests washing the exterior in fall with mild detergent and a soft brush, and looking for peeling paint, rust and dents. If rust shows at a bottom edge or a hinge, a technician can tell whether it is cosmetic or a weak point. See road salt and garage door rust and salt air and garage doors.

Power cuts and the release handle

Nor'easters can knock out power, and the opener will not work without it. Know where the red release handle is, and try it once when there is no storm so you are not learning in the dark. The door should lift by hand and stay where you leave it. If it is heavy or drops, stop and call. See opening your garage door in a power outage.

Typical jobs and how to choose a company

The jobs we see most are broken springs and cables, off-track doors, sensors that will not align, openers that stall and worn seals. See spring repair, cable repair and garage door repair.

  • Ask for a written quote that lists each part and the labor.
  • Ask whether both springs are replaced and why.
  • Ask your town building department what it requires if you change the door.
  • Read your HOA documents before you order a new door.

Questions people ask

Does salt air damage a garage door?

Salt can leave residue and may speed rust on exposed metal. Wash the outside in fall with mild detergent and look for rust, as Clopay suggests.

Can a nor'easter damage my garage door?

Strong wind can bend a section or loosen hardware, and flooding can reach a door at street level. Check for dents, a crooked door and loose parts after a storm.

What do I do if the power goes out?

Pull the red release handle and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy, drops or sticks, stop and call a technician.

Do I need a permit for a new garage door?

Rules differ by city and town. Ask your building department and read your HOA documents before you order.
