What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

Newer houses, condos and apartment buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Franklin has about 13,000 housing units and the median home was built in 1985. About 63 percent are detached single-family houses, about 10 percent are attached homes such as townhouses, and about 18 percent are in buildings of five or more units. About 78 percent of households own their home. Homes of that age usually have a second generation of springs and an opener that is due for a belt or a new logic board.
Wikipedia says Franklin was settled in 1660 and incorporated in 1778 from the western part of Wrentham, and that its public library began lending books on November 20, 1790, after receiving 116 books from Benjamin Franklin. Dean College, founded in 1865, is in town, and the Franklin Common Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. We could not confirm whether a local commission reviews garage doors there, so ask the town if your house is near the Common.

What your garage door is telling you in Franklin
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A torsion spring snapped | Replace both springs and balance the door |
| The door shakes or scrapes going up | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose track bolts | Replace rollers, tighten the track and lubricate |
| The door stops partway and reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors and reset the force |
| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener and test the safety reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What Franklin weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's Franklin weather table, from a NOAA station and 1991-2020 normals, shows about 50 inches of precipitation and about 48 inches of snow a year, with February the snowiest month. That is a regional reading, not a measure for every street. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping, and road salt corrodes tracks and hardware.
On December 20, 2025 a failed transfer loop at a substation, not individual lines, left about 1,600 Franklin households without power around 4:30 AM, according to Franklin Matters, and downed trees blocked streets at the peak. In an outage the opener will not run, so everyone in the house should know where the red manual release cord is and how to use it.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Know where the manual release is
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter
- Clear ice from the bottom seal

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Franklin
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Franklin is a town with its own Building and Inspections Department in the Municipal Building, 355 East Central Street. The town's online-permitting page lists 508-520-4926 as the contact and says the department accepts permits online through its permit portal. It does not mention doors or garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work at franklinma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit but does not mention garage doors, so the town's answer is the one that counts. The Franklin Common Historic District is on the National Register; we could not confirm whether any town review applies to garage doors there.

Franklin garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Franklin?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Franklin (ZIP 02038) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Franklin?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Franklin?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Franklin?
Franklin's street ZIP code is 02038. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Franklin require a permit to replace a garage door?
We could not confirm it. The town's pages do not mention garage doors, so call the Building and Inspections Department at 508-520-4926 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
What should I do with my garage door during a power outage in Franklin?
Pull the red manual release cord to open or close the door by hand, and keep the opener unplugged or switched off until the power is steady. Call us if the door is heavy or does not stay up, because that can mean a worn spring.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
