A South Shore town of marshes, rivers and shore villages

According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Marshfield has about 11,800 housing units and about 10,400 households, and the median owner-occupied home is worth about $680,300. We could not verify the age of the housing stock or the share of single-family houses, so we do not guess at them.

Wikipedia says Marshfield was settled in 1632, incorporated on March 1, 1640 and named for its many salt marshes. It lists the villages of Marshfield Center, Fieldston, Ocean Bluff, Rexhame, Brant Rock, Green Harbor, Marshfield Hills and North Marshfield, and the North, South and Green Harbor rivers run through town.

What Marshfield weather does to a garage door

Marshfield has no climate table that we could read, so the temperatures here come from the nearest NOAA table we found, Wikipedia's Plymouth/Kingston normals for 1991-2020, which sit a little inland: a January mean daily high of 41.0 degrees and low of 21.8, a July mean high of 84.0, about 53 inches of precipitation and about 38 inches of snow a year. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping.

UPI named Marshfield among the coastal communities flooded on January 4, 2018, when winds of hurricane strength pushed tides higher than normal. Salt air and marsh damp rust springs, tracks and hinges, and flooded garages can ruin openers and sensors.

Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a flood, have the opener and sensors checked before you use them.

  • Rinse salt from exposed hardware
  • Have openers checked after a flood
  • Know where the manual release is

Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Marshfield

Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.

Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.

Town permits. Marshfield's Building Department is at Town Hall, 870 Moraine Street, phone 781-834-5555, open Monday 8 am to 7 pm, Tuesday to Thursday 8 am to 4 pm and Friday 8 am to 12:30 pm. The department's page asks you to call for an appointment with the Building Commissioner if a project may need building, zoning or other permitting, or if your property is in a flood zone. It does not mention doors or garage doors. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so call before the work or visit marshfield-ma.gov.

State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit, but it does not mention garage doors, so the answer from the town is the one that counts.

FAQ

Marshfield garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Marshfield?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Marshfield (ZIP 02050) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Marshfield?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Marshfield?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Marshfield?

Marshfield has one street ZIP code, 02050. Brant Rock, Green Harbor and Marshfield Hills have PO-box ZIPs that are not used for street delivery, so use 02050 when you book. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Does Marshfield require a permit to replace a garage door?

Marshfield's Building Department page does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the department at 781-834-5555 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.

Do you repair garage doors in Brant Rock and Green Harbor?

Yes. We serve every village of Marshfield, including Brant Rock, Green Harbor, Ocean Bluff and Marshfield Hills. Tell us your street and we confirm the visit.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
