What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Older two- and three-family buildings, with some detached houses and apartment blocks
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, New Bedford has about 44,300 housing units and the median home was built in 1938. About 31 percent are detached single-family houses, about 2 percent are attached homes, about 47 percent are two- to four-unit buildings and about 21 percent are in buildings of five or more units. About 40 percent of households own their home. Many doors here are shared, on older buildings, or sit at ground level under the living floors, so we ask who owns the door and where the opener is wired before we quote.
Wikipedia says New Bedford was one of the world's most important whaling ports in the first half of the 19th century, became a town in 1787 and a city in 1847, and is home to the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. It lists nine National Register historic districts, including Acushnet Heights, Buttonwood Park, County Street and Central New Bedford. The Bedford-Landing Waterfront Historic District is the city's local district, where the Historical Commission reviews exterior changes, so ask first if your building is near the waterfront.
Tell us your street, how many units the building has and who maintains the door, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What your garage door is telling you in New Bedford
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The door is heavy and will not stay up | A spring has lost tension or broken | Replace the springs as a set and rebalance the door |
| The door jumped off its track | A bent track or a broken roller | Straighten or replace the track, replace rollers, reset the door |
| The opener runs but nothing moves | A stripped gear, broken spring or a disconnected door | Test the opener, repair or replace the failed part |
| The door closes crooked | A stretched or slipped cable | Replace the cable and level the door |
| The remote works only close to the door | A weak battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery and test the receiver |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What New Bedford weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia gives New Bedford NOAA normals for 1991 to 2020 of a July mean daily high of 84.0 F and a January mean daily low of 22.1 F, with about 52 inches of precipitation and about 32 inches of snow a year. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping, and salt air off the harbor and Buzzards Bay corrodes tracks and hardware.
A hurricane barrier built across the harbor between 1962 and 1966, after the 1938 and 1954 hurricanes, protects the inner harbor and about 80 percent of the land flooded in those storms, according to Army Corps summaries. We found no New Bedford outage count for a recent storm. When the power fails the opener will not run, so everyone in the building should know where the red manual release cord is and how to use it.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Near the water, rinse salt off the lower track and hinges in spring.
- Know where the manual release is
- Rinse salt off hardware near the water
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter

Opener safety, permits and design rules in New Bedford
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. New Bedford is a city with its own Inspectional Services Department at 133 William Street, Room 308 (508-979-1540). The city's budget page says it enforces the state and local building, plumbing, gas and electrical codes, reviews permit applications and issues permits for construction, alteration and repair, and inspects multi-family dwellings; permits are filed online. The page does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work at newbedford-ma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate, so the city's answer is the one that counts. The city's local historic district, Bedford-Landing Waterfront, has its own Historical Commission; we could not confirm whether it reviews garage doors, so ask before you change a door there. Most New Bedford homes are in buildings of two or more units, so ask your landlord or owner who may order work on a shared door.

New Bedford garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in New Bedford?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in New Bedford (ZIPs 02740, 02744, 02745 and 02746) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in New Bedford?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in New Bedford?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in New Bedford?
New Bedford's street ZIP codes are 02740, 02744, 02745 and 02746. One directory lists 02741 and 02742 as PO-box ZIP codes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does New Bedford require a permit to replace a garage door?
We could not confirm it. The city's page does not mention garage doors, so call Inspectional Services at 508-979-1540 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors on two- and three-family buildings in New Bedford?
Yes. About 47 percent of New Bedford homes are in two- to four-unit buildings, and the doors there are often shared or at ground level. Tell us who owns the door and where the opener is wired, and we book a visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
