Early-1970s homes, older districts and a growing south side
According to the 2020 census figures on Wikipedia, Amarillo has about 87,340 housing units, and 59.5 percent of the occupied ones are owner-occupied. Third-party housing sites put the median year built in the early 1970s, so treat that as approximate. A door and opener from that decade are usually on their second set of springs, or overdue for one.
Named neighborhoods include the Wolflin Historic District, a National Register district of about 12 blocks around Oldham Circle and Hughes Street, and San Jacinto Heights, established in 1909. Wikipedia says the city has grown mostly to the south and northwest. We could not verify whether changing a door in a historic district needs review, so ask the city and any association before you order.
Give us your cross street and say whether the door is a single, a double or a pair of singles, and we schedule the soonest visit. Each door is weighed and balanced before we choose new springs.
- Original openers and tracks on 1970s homes
- Historic districts: ask before changing a door
- Wide doors on newer south-side homes

I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review
My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

What Amarillo weather does to a garage door
Amarillo has a semi-arid climate. Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals show a July high near 93 degrees, a January low near 25, about 20 inches of precipitation and about 17 inches of snow in a year. A door sees more than 60 days a year above 90 degrees and some mornings in the teens, and those swings work on springs, cables and weatherstripping.
Wikipedia says The Weather Channel has called Amarillo the windiest city in the country, and the National Weather Service reported a 75 mph gust in February 2023. Severe weather runs from April to July, and a hail-report site lists golf-ball-size hail near the city in 2025. Wind can push a light door out of its track, and hail dents steel panels.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, put a little lubricant on the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a wind or hail storm, look at the track and panels before you run the opener.
- Check tracks after high wind
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Look for dented panels after hail

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Amarillo
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Amarillo is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Amarillo. Building Safety is at the Simms Municipal Building, 808 S Buchanan Street, Suite 104, phone 806-378-3041, and permits go through the city's MGO Connect portal. The city says a permit is needed to alter or repair a building or to work on regulated electrical systems, but neither the Building Safety page nor its list of exempt work mentions garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit, so call Building Safety before the work or visit amarillo.gov. The city also lists the Wolflin and San Jacinto historic areas; we could not verify what review they require for doors.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Amarillo garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Amarillo?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Amarillo (ZIP 79101) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Amarillo?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Amarillo?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Amarillo?
Amarillo's standard street ZIP codes are 79101, 79102, 79103, 79104, 79106, 79107, 79108, 79109, 79110, 79111, 79118, 79119, 79121 and 79124. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you work on both sides of the Potter and Randall County line?
Yes. Amarillo is the county seat of Potter County, and the southern half of the city is in Randall County. Homes on either side get the same visit.
What does the wind do to a garage door in Amarillo?
Strong gusts can push a light door out of its track, bend the track and strain the opener. If your door shakes, scrapes or has come off the track, stop using the opener and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
