A college town where about half the homes are rented
According to the 2020 census figures on Wikipedia, Canyon has 6,504 housing units, and the occupied ones split almost evenly: 49.6 percent owner-occupied and 50.4 percent rented. The median age is 26.8 because West Texas A&M University's main campus sits near the center of town. Third-party housing sites put the median year built around 1983, so many doors and openers are now past 40.
If you rent, a broken spring or a dead opener usually goes through your landlord or property manager. We can talk to them, explain what the door needs and quote the price before any work starts. Owners and managers both get a written explanation of what we found.
We could not verify typical building materials or any association-run neighborhoods in Canyon from public sources, so tell us your cross street and the size of the door when you call.

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

What Canyon weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals give Canyon a July mean daily high of 92.7 degrees, about 18 inches of precipitation and about 7.6 inches of snow a year. Records run from 109 degrees to minus 14. Amarillo, 17 miles north, has a January low near 25 degrees, which is the nearest documented comparison. Those swings stress springs and cables.
Hail-report databases, which are crowd-sourced and incomplete, list 2.5-inch hail at Canyon on June 8, 2025, with social-media reports of broken windows, and 2.75-inch hail 4 miles west of town on June 23, 2026. A tornado touched down about 6 miles west-southwest of Canyon on March 22, 2019. On open ground like this, gusts and hail load a door that is not in good shape.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks and lubricate the rollers and hinges. After hail or high wind, look for dents, bent track sections and loose brackets before you use the opener.
- Check panels and tracks after hail
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Test the safety reverse each season

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Canyon
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Canyon is its own city and the county seat of Randall County. We could not reach the city's own website, so we are relying on a third-party permit guide last verified in March 2026. It lists the city's planning and permits office at 301 16th Street, with permits and inspections at 806-655-5034, and says a permit is required for construction and demolition inside city limits. Please confirm those details with the city. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or opener swap needs a permit, so ask the city before the work.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Canyon garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Canyon?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Canyon (ZIP 79015) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Canyon?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Canyon?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Canyon?
Canyon's street ZIP code is 79015. ZIP 79016 is a single-organization code that serves West Texas A&M University. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors for rental homes near West Texas A&M?
Yes. A tenant or a landlord can book the visit. We explain what the door needs, quote the price before we start and can talk to the property manager if that is easier.
What should I do after a hailstorm in Canyon?
Look at the panels for dents, the tracks for bends and the weatherstripping for tears before you run the opener. If the door rubs, shakes or sticks, stop using the opener and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
