What Plainview weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia calls Plainview's climate semiarid, with about 19 inches of precipitation and 8.2 inches of snow a year, a record high of 112 degrees and a record low of minus 8. Lubbock, about 50 miles south, averages 93.4 degrees for a July high and 55.0 for a January high. Heat and cold both wear on springs, seals and lubricant.
National Weather Service Lubbock storm data lists hail up to 3 inches in the Plainview area in May 2005, along with an F0 tornado about 10 miles northeast of town, flooded roads and wind gusts that blew the roof off a convenience store. Hail of about 1 to 2.75 inches and brief tornadoes were reported near Plainview from 1996 to 1998, and NWS Lubbock surveyed a tornado event near the city in May 2019. A local reference page calls the South Plains one of the most hail-prone zones in the country.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After hail or a gust front, look for dents and bent track sections before you run the opener.
- Check panels and tracks after hail
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Test the safety reverse each season

Modest homes from around 1970 on the Llano Estacado
Plainview had 20,187 residents in the 2020 census, down from 22,194 in 2010, and Wikipedia counts 8,549 housing units, of which 13.2 percent were vacant. Census QuickFacts figures for 2019 to 2023 give an owner-occupied rate of 50.6 percent and a median home value of $107,800. A third-party site puts the median year built around 1970, so treat that as approximate.
That age matters for garage doors: an opener and a set of springs from the 1970s or 1980s have usually been through thousands of cycles. The city sits at 3,363 feet on the Llano Estacado, and the downtown Plainview Commercial Historic District is a business district, not a residential one. We could not verify typical building materials or any association-run neighborhoods.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We check the balance of the door before we pick new springs.
- Springs and openers worn from decades of use
- Single-car doors on smaller homes
- Wide doors on newer houses

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Plainview
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A torsion spring snapped | Replace both springs and balance the door |
| The door shakes or scrapes going up | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose track bolts | Replace rollers, tighten the track and lubricate |
| The door stops partway and reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors and reset the force |
| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener and test the safety reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Opener safety, permits and design rules in Plainview
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Plainview is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Plainview. Building Permits and Inspections is at 202 W. 5th Street, phone (806) 296-1100, open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 5:30; Building Inspections and Planning and Zoning also list (806) 296-1120. The city's list of work that needs a permit includes adding or relocating electrical circuits, HVAC, gas and plumbing work, water heaters, wall removals, changing the size or location of windows and exterior doors, garage or carport conversions and driveway approaches. It does not mention garage door replacement or opener installation, so we could not confirm whether either needs a permit. Call the city before the work or visit plainviewtx.org. The city says it enforces the ICC building codes.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Is there garage door repair near me in Plainview?

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Plainview?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Plainview?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Plainview?
Plainview's street ZIP code is 79072; 79073 is for PO boxes. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach it.
Do you serve the towns around Plainview?

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Plainview?
We could not confirm that. The city's permit list does not mention garage door replacement or opener installation. Call Building Inspections at (806) 296-1100 or (806) 296-1120 before the work.
What does hail do to a garage door?
Hail can dent steel panels, crack windows in the door and tear weatherstripping. Check the panels and tracks after a storm, and if the door rubs or sticks, stop using the opener and call us.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
