What Bedford weather does to a garage door
No Bedford climate table was found, so these are regional figures. The Dallas table for 1991 to 2020 gives a July mean daily high near 97 degrees and a January mean low near 38, and DFW Airport recorded 113 degrees in June 1980 and minus 2 on February 16, 2021. Heat wears springs, cables and weather seals, and a hard freeze stiffens the grease on rollers and hinges.
Hail is the strongest local fact. On the evening of May 27, 2024, the National Weather Service log of hail reports lists baseball-size hail (2.75 inches) a mile north of Bedford, hen-egg and golf-ball hail within a mile or two, and many quarter-size reports. Some are crowd-sourced reports, and we found no damage totals. Hail dents steel and thin panels and can crack window inserts, and wind bends tracks. After the February 2021 winter storm, the largest power outage in Texas history, know where your manual release is.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a hail storm, look at the panels, the window inserts and the track before you run the opener.
- Inspect panels and inserts after hail
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Know where the manual release is

Ranch and split-level homes from the 1970s and 1980s
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Bedford has about 21,900 housing units. About 53 percent are single-family detached houses, a large share of the rest are apartments and other multi-unit buildings, and owners and renters each occupy about half of the occupied homes. The median year built is 1983 and the median owner-occupied home value is about $350,700, so many original garage doors and openers are 30 years old or more.
The Old Bedford School on School Lane is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school opened on its current site in 1912 and closed in 1969. We found no design review rule for garage doors anywhere in the city, but we could not verify that none exists, so ask the city before you change the front of an older building.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.
- Original openers and tracks on 1980s homes
- Second sets of springs on older doors
- Single and double doors on smaller homes

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Bedford
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Slams down or will not lift | A broken torsion spring | Replace the spring set, balance the door, test the safety reverse |
| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Opener safety, permits and design rules in Bedford
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Bedford is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Bedford. The Building Inspections Division is at 1805 L Don Dodson Drive, phone 817-952-2140, and inspection requests go through the city's online portal. The city's page on when a building permit is required says a Miscellaneous Building Permit is needed for same-size window and exterior door replacement, and that electrical work such as panel upgrades, new outlets and generators needs an electrical permit. Garage doors are not addressed there, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Plumbing, mechanical and electrical contractors must be registered with the city; we could not confirm whether garage door repair companies must register. Ask the city before the work at bedfordtx.gov.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. The Texas Department of Public Safety says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is tied to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Bedford garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Bedford?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Bedford (ZIP 76021) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Bedford?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Bedford?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Bedford?
Bedford's street ZIP codes are 76021 and 76022. ZIP 76095 is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors after hail in Bedford?
Yes. The National Weather Service log for the evening of May 27, 2024 lists baseball-size hail a mile north of Bedford. Hail can dent steel panels and crack window inserts, so we inspect the panels, track, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
My Bedford garage door is 30 years old. Should I repair it or replace it?
It depends on the panels, the track and the springs. If the panels are sound, new springs, cables or rollers often bring an older door back to smooth work, and an opener can be replaced on its own. If panels are cracked or rotted, replacement makes more sense. We look at the door, explain both options and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
