A city built in the postwar boom

According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Hurst has about 16,800 housing units and the median home was built in 1975. About 63 percent of the units are single-family detached houses and about 58 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. A door installed in the 1970s or 80s has often been through a second set of springs, so worn parts are common here.

The Handbook of Texas says the community was first called Ormel and took the name Hurst in 1909. Residents voted 36 to 24 to incorporate in 1951, the year Bell Aircraft announced a plant there, and the population climbed from 10,165 in 1960 to 27,215 in 1970. Many of the houses we see date from that boom, with doors and openers that are now very old.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

  • Original openers and tracks on 1960s and 70s houses
  • Single-car doors on compact older homes
  • Replacement doors that match brick fronts

My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Older one-story red-brick home with a gray roof, a white raised-panel single-car garage door and a large pecan tree, garage door opener repair near Hurst in North Richland Hills
North Texas heat, hail and ice

What Hurst weather does to a garage door

Hurst is about 13 miles from DFW Airport, whose 1991-2020 normals on Wikipedia give a July mean daily high of 95.6 degrees and a January mean low of 36.1, with about 37 inches of precipitation a year. Long hot summers wear springs and rubber seals, and a hard freeze stiffens grease on rollers and hinges.

Wikipedia says the Fort Worth area is very susceptible to supercell thunderstorms with large hail and tornadoes. Hail can dent steel panels and strong wind can bend a track. In February 2021 rotating outages left many North Texans without power for days, so know where the red manual-release cord is and how to use it.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, check for bent track sections and dented panels before you run the opener.

  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
  • Check tracks and panels after hail or wind
  • Know where the manual release is

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Hurst

Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.

HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.

City permits. Hurst is its own city, so permits come from the City of Hurst. Building Inspections is at 1505 Precinct Line Road, phone 817-788-7088, and permits are filed online through the city's Citizen Self-Service portal. The city adds the contractor to the permit with a US-issued ID and a certificate of insurance. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so call Building Inspections before the work or visit hursttx.gov.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. The Texas Department of Public Safety says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can monitor or log who comes and goes.

FAQ

Hurst garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Hurst?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Hurst (ZIP 76053) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Hurst?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Hurst?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Hurst?

Hurst's street ZIP codes are 76053 and 76054. We also serve the neighboring Mid-Cities. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do homes from the 1960s and 70s need new springs?

Often, yes. A spring is rated for a set number of door cycles, and a door that has run for decades has usually used them up. We weigh and balance the door and replace springs in pairs.

Do you repair garage doors after a Hurst storm?

Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
