What Groves weather does to a garage door

Groves has no climate table of its own, so we use the Port Arthur airport station next to the city. Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals give a July mean daily high of 92.6 degrees and August 93.1, with about 62 inches of precipitation a year. That much humid rain rusts springs, cables, rollers and bottom brackets, and summer heat stresses opener motors and seals.

Hurricane Rita in September 2005 brought a 116 mph gust to Port Arthur, which borders Groves on three sides, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also says trees were downed in Groves in Hurricane Laura in 2020, and that nearby Nederland recorded 60.58 inches of rain over four days in Hurricane Harvey. After a storm, know where your manual release cord is, and if water reaches the opener, leave the power off until it is checked.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks and springs, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. In this climate, look for rust at the bottom bracket and cable ends.

  • Check springs and cables for rust
  • Test the safety reverse every season
  • Know where the manual release is

Groves homes

Mostly one-story homes from the 1960s

According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Groves has about 6,800 housing units. About 88 percent are single-family detached houses and about 78 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1967, so many homes have garages that are 50 years old or more. The median home value in the same survey is $163,600.

Wikipedia says the community began as Pecan Grove and was renamed for Asa Groves, and that Groves incorporated as a city in 1952. An opener from before the federal safety standard issued in 1991 is worth a safety-reverse test, since that standard requires the door to reverse within 2 seconds of touching an obstruction. We could not verify any named subdivisions or association rules.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Groves

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Groves is its own city. The Inspections and Permits Division of Public Works is at 4925 McKinley, Building Official (409) 960-5707, open weekdays 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., at grovestx.gov. The city says a permit is required before you build, remodel, add on, or make repairs or improvements to a home or business, and that permits are applied for and paid online only. The page does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Ask the division before the work. The city also says all contractors must register online with the city before doing any work in Groves.

Wind rules. Jefferson County is one of the 14 coastal counties in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association's first tier, and the Texas Department of Insurance's legacy map places Groves in its Inland I zone, with a 120 mph design wind speed. TDI says garage doors must be tested to ASTM E 330; we could not confirm whether swapping one door triggers WPI-8 paperwork, so ask the city and your insurance agent.

State rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

FAQ

Groves garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Groves?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Groves (ZIP 77619) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Groves?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Groves?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Groves?

Groves has one street ZIP code, 77619. Port Arthur surrounds the city on three sides, so give us your address when you call and we confirm the visit.

Do you serve Port Arthur, Port Neches and Nederland as well as Groves?

Yes. Port Arthur borders Groves on three sides, Port Neches lies to the north-west and Nederland is just beyond it. Tell us your address and we book the soonest visit.

Do I need to register a contractor with the City of Groves before a door job?

The city says all contractors must register online with the city before doing any work in Groves, and that permits are applied for online. We could not confirm whether a like-for-like garage door swap needs a permit, so ask the Inspections and Permits Division at (409) 960-5707.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
