According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Kerrville has about 11,650 housing units. About 63 percent are single-family detached houses, about 18 percent are in buildings with five or more units, and about 59 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1983, so many original garage doors and openers are now 40 years old or more.

Comanche Trace, about four miles south of downtown, is a gated, master-planned golf community with a mandatory homeowners association and design standards, according to real-estate marketing pages. We could not verify which other Kerrville neighborhoods are gated or have association rules, so check yours before you choose a new door style or color.

What Kerrville weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia's NOAA normals give Kerrville an August mean daily high of 92.8 degrees and a January mean low of 33.8, with about 30.6 inches of precipitation and only about half an inch of snow a year. The record low is minus 7 degrees. Summer heat works springs, openers and weatherstripping hard, and a rare hard freeze stiffens rubber seals and lubricant.

The Guadalupe River runs through the city. On July 4, 2025, according to Wikipedia, the river rose about 21 feet in an hour at Kerrville, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency, and Kerr County lost 117 people to the flood. We offer our sympathy to everyone affected. If water got into your garage, do not run the opener until the wiring, motor and receiver have been checked, and expect the bottom seal and lower panel section to need a look.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Know where your manual release is, since a power cut leaves the door closed.

  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
  • Have an opener checked before use after any flooding
  • Know where the manual release is

Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Kerrville

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Kerrville is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Kerrville. Building Inspection can be reached at 830-258-1514, and City Hall is at 701 Main Street. The city's permit page says a permit is required for each stage of construction and is issued to the contractor doing the work, and that a floodplain elevation certificate can be required in a flood hazard area. It does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Call before the work or visit kerrvilletx.gov.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing garage door or gate openers and accessories needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

FAQ

Kerrville garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Kerrville?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Kerrville (ZIP 78028) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Kerrville?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Kerrville?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Kerrville?

Kerrville's standard delivery ZIP code is 78028. The other Kerrville code, 78029, is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you service garage doors in Comanche Trace and other planned communities?

Yes. Comanche Trace is a gated, master-planned community with a homeowners association and an architectural review process. Check the association's rules on door style and color before you choose a new door, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.

Can you check an opener after water got into the garage?

Yes. Do not run an opener that has been wet. We check the motor, the receiver, the wiring and the safety sensors, look at the bottom seal and lower panel, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
