"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Long low limestone ranch with a green metal roof, a white raised-panel two-car garage door and mesquite, garage door replacement near Taylor in Hutto
Central Texas heat, storm lines and the 2022 tornado

What Taylor weather does to a garage door

Taylor has a humid subtropical climate. The nearest NOAA 1991-2020 normals we used, from Austin's Camp Mabry station about 27 miles away, give a July average high near 97 degrees and about 123 days a year at 90 degrees or more. Taylor is farther east and away from Austin's heat, so treat that as approximate. Long hot spells wear springs, cables and openers.

On March 21, 2022 a storm line that began in Round Rock produced a tornado that touched down in northwest Taylor, according to the Taylor Press. It downed power lines on County Road 368 and damaged roofs on Cotton Row Lane, and Williamson County reported 1,119 damaged structures countywide. Wind can push a door out of its track, and the February 2021 winter storm showed why the manual release matters in an outage.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, check the track and panels before you run the opener.

  • Check tracks and panels after storms
  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
  • Know where the manual release is

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Taylor

Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.

HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.

City permits. Taylor is its own city. Development Services is at 400 Porter Street, phone 512-309-6701, and permits, payments and inspection requests go through the city's MGO Connect portal. Permit questions can go to permits@taylortx.gov, and the city warns that work without a required permit may bring fines. The city's building page lists checklists for new homes, remodels and stand-alone electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fence and driveway work but does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. The city adopted the 2018 International Residential Code on October 14, 2021, according to the same page. Ask the city at taylortx.gov.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page (published September 2020) says installing a garage door opener needs no DPS license unless it is connected to an alarm system or monitors or logs who comes and goes.

FAQ

Taylor garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Taylor?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Taylor (ZIP 76574) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Taylor?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Taylor?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Taylor?

Taylor has one ZIP code, 76574. Do not confuse it with Taylor County near Abilene, which is a different part of Texas. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you repair garage doors in Taylor's historic downtown?

Yes. The Taylor Downtown Historic District is on the National Register, and we could not verify whether the city reviews garage door changes there. Ask the city first if you plan a new door on a historic building, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.

Do you repair garage doors after a storm in Taylor?

Yes. Wind can push a door out of its track or bend the track, and hail can dent steel panels. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
