Most electric gate failures come down to four things. Check these before you call.

An electric gate that will not open is almost always a problem with power, a sensor, the remote, or a gate that is binding. Check these four things before you call, and do not stand in the path of a gate that might move.
1. Power
Check that the operator has power. Look at the outlet or breaker that feeds it and at any status light on the control box. Battery and solar systems can run flat after a few cloudy days or after a heat wave, and a backup battery that has aged will not carry the gate through an outage. See electric gate repair.
2. Sensors and the path
Safety sensors, edges and loops stop the gate if something is in the way. Leaves, dirt, a spider web or a sensor knocked out of line can make the gate stop or refuse to move. Clear the path and wipe the sensor lenses.
3. The remote or keypad
If the keypad or wall control works but the remote does not, replace the remote battery. If nothing works, the receiver or the control board may have failed. If the gate opens with a keypad but not with the remote, the remote needs reprogramming. See access control.
4. A binding gate
If the motor hums and the gate does not move, the gate may be dragging, a hinge may have dropped or a wheel may be stuck in the track. Use the manual release as the manufacturer directs, and move the gate by hand. A gate that is hard to move by hand needs gate repair before the operator will work reliably.
When to call
Call if the motor hums but does nothing, the gate stops halfway, the control board shows an error or the gate keeps reversing. Never bypass a safety sensor.
Questions people ask
Why does my gate hum but not move?
Usually a binding gate or a failed gear, arm or capacitor. Do not keep running it. Call us so we do not burn out the motor.
How do I open an electric gate during a power outage?
Most operators have a manual release. Check your manual for how to use it, and call us to check the backup battery afterwards.
Can I repair a gate operator myself?
Simple battery and remote swaps are fine. Anything with the control board, wiring or moving parts should be done by a technician.
