A garage door freezes to the floor when its bottom seal sits in water or wet snow that turns to ice. Do not force it. Disconnect the opener, chip the ice gently or use warm water, lift the door, then clean and dry the spot so it does not refreeze.
Why the door freezes shut
Melt water, rain and slush run toward a garage door and pool along the bottom edge. When the temperature drops, that water freezes and bonds the rubber seal to the concrete. Clopay describes this exact problem: a door stuck with ice or snow at the bottom, frozen through the bottom weather seal.
In Illinois, freezing rain is part of the problem. The Illinois State Climatologist Office defines freezing rain as rain falling through a shallow below-freezing layer of air near the ground, and it freezes on contact. A garage door face and its bottom edge are exactly the kind of surface that collects it.

Before you start
- Do not press the opener button again and again. A frozen door can strain the opener and the springs.
- Keep people and pets clear of the door.
- Have warm water, a plastic scraper or a wooden stick, a towel and a squeegee ready.
- Do not use a metal pry bar or a sharp tool against the seal.
How to free the door
Stop the opener
Disconnect the opener from the door only if the door is closed. Pull the red release handle once so the opener cannot push on a frozen door.
Look at the bottom edge
Find where the ice holds. It may be along the whole bottom, or only at one corner.
Chip gently
Use a plastic scraper or a wooden stick to chip loose ice near the seal. Work in short strokes and keep the tool away from the rubber.
Or use warm water
Pour warm water along the frozen edge. Clopay lists warm water as an option. Skip anything hotter, since the seal and the finish do not need the extra stress.
Lift by hand
Raise the door a few inches. If it moves smoothly and stays where you leave it, keep going. If it binds, stops or feels very heavy, stop and call.
Clean and dry
Wipe the floor and the bottom seal, and squeegee water away from the door so it does not refreeze.
Reconnect and test
Reconnect the opener with the door closed, then run it once and watch the bottom edge.
Clopay notes that waxing the door can help keep ice melt from sticking to it, and that ice melt should be cleaned off metal doors. Wipe the bottom edge after any salting.
What to avoid
Clopay says not to force the door, because that can tear the weather seal. Do not yank on the handle, pry at the bottom, or use ice melt on the door itself. Skip home remedies from friends or neighbors, and check with the door's dealer if you are unsure.
If the seal tore, the door may freeze again sooner. Read bottom seal replacement for what a new seal does, and weatherstripping for Illinois winters for the rest of the seals.
When to call a technician
Call if the door is crooked after you freed it, if a section is bent, if it sounds different or scrapes in the track, or if you heard a pop. Those point to a spring, cable or track problem, and neither is a home repair. See garage door repair and spring repair.
A torn bottom seal is a simple repair, and it is worth doing before the next freeze.

Questions people ask
Why is my garage door frozen to the ground?
Water pooled under the bottom seal and froze, bonding the rubber to the concrete. It is common after a thaw followed by a hard freeze.
Can I pour hot water on a frozen garage door?
Clopay lists warm water as a way to free the seal. Use warm, not boiling, water, then dry the area so it does not refreeze.
Will forcing the door break it?
It can. Clopay warns that forcing a frozen door can tear the weather seal, and it can also strain the springs and opener.
Can I use ice melt to free my garage door?
Clopay says to avoid ice melt on the door, especially a metal one, and to clean off any that gets on it.
