Garage Door Opener Stopping in the Heat

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 5 min read · Openers and remotes

Short answer

Some openers have a thermal protector that stops the motor when it gets too hot and lets it restart after it cools. Do not assume that is your problem: a heavy, unbalanced door or a broken spring makes an opener work harder. Disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy, stop and call a technician.

Why an opener might stop on a hot day

An opener is a motor in a closed garage. In an Arizona summer that garage can be far hotter than the house, and the National Weather Service in Phoenix issues Extreme Heat Warnings when Major or Extreme HeatRisk is forecast. We could not find a manufacturer page that gives the safe temperature range for a home opener, so we do not quote a number. Your owner's manual or the label on the motor unit is the place to look.

What manuals do say is that a motor can be protected against overheating. Genie's manual for its medium duty operator states that the motor is protected by an internal thermal protector, that it resets automatically once the motor has cooled, and that a trained technician may be needed to correct the cause of the overheating. A home opener may differ, so read your own manual.

Heat can be a factor in any of these. We confirm the cause on site.

Five checks, in this order

  1. Stop and let the opener rest

Do not press the button repeatedly. Give the motor time to cool, as the manual for your model says.

  2. Disconnect the opener

Pull the red release handle with the door down.

  3. Test the balance

Lift the door to the halfway point and let go. Clopay says a balanced door stays where you leave it. If it drops or rises, the springs need a technician.

  4. Move the door by hand

It should lift and lower easily. If it is hard to move, opens too quickly or a roller leaves the track, stop using it.

  5. Look, do not touch, at the springs and cables

A visibly broken spring, a gap in the coils or a frayed cable means the door must not be run.

Do not keep running a struggling opener

Clopay warns not to operate a door with a broken spring and not to operate a door that is hard to move. Never bypass a safety sensor to make a door close, and leave spring and cable work to a technician.

Sensors and the monthly test

Clopay says photo eyes belong on the left and right sides at the bottom of the opening, that their sensing feature should be retested following the opener maker's instructions, and that the whole door should get a visual inspection monthly. A dusty lens or a misaligned eye can stop a door from closing even when the motor is fine. Wipe the lens with a soft dry cloth first.

Quick answers

Can a garage door opener overheat?

Some manuals describe an internal thermal protector that stops the motor when it overheats and resets after it cools. Check the manual for your model; we do not quote a temperature limit.

Why does my garage door opener stop working in summer?

It could be motor protection, a door that is out of balance or heavy, a broken spring, a dirty sensor or a weak remote battery. Test the balance by hand first.

Is it safe to keep pressing the button?

No. Repeated presses on a heavy or unbalanced door strain the opener and the door. Stop, disconnect the opener and check the balance.

How do I tell if the problem is the door or the opener?

Pull the red release handle and lift the door to the halfway point. If it stays put and moves easily, the door is probably fine. If it is heavy or drops, the door needs a technician.

When to replace or repair the opener

If the door is balanced, moves smoothly by hand and the opener still stops, the unit may need service. See opener repair for what a visit checks and remotes and parts for batteries and keypads. If the opener is old and the door is sound, a new one may cost less than repeated visits.
