If the wall button works but the remote does not, start with the remote. Replace its battery, move closer to the opener and check for LED bulb interference, as Chamberlain suggests. A keypad that fails first also points to its battery. If a fresh battery and reprogramming do not help, the receiver or remote may need service.
Start with what still works
The wall button is wired to the opener. A remote and a keypad use a radio signal and their own batteries. So when the wall button works and the remote does not, the opener is probably fine and the problem is in the remote, the battery or the signal.
When nothing works, not even the wall button, that is a different problem. See opener repair.

What you see and what it likely means
| What you see | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Wall button works, remote does not | Weak or dead remote battery | Replace the battery, check it sits correctly |
| Remote works only up close | Weak battery, or interference | Fresh battery, then check LED bulbs near the opener |
| Keypad display is dim or ignores presses | Weak keypad battery | Replace the keypad battery, then try your code |
| Remote and keypad both stopped | Opener memory or receiver | Reprogram both from the opener's learn button |
| Nothing responds, not even the wall button | Power or opener fault | Check the plug and the outlet, then call |
Check your opener's manual for model-specific steps.
Why the cold can matter
Every battery has a temperature range it is built for. For one example, Energizer's datasheet for its 9-volt alkaline battery lists an operating temperature of minus 18 to 55 degrees Celsius, which is about 0 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Many remote and keypad batteries are other types, so look at the battery in your own device, but the idea is the same: a battery that is marginal in a warm room can fail in an unheated garage or on a car visor.
That is also why the remote in your car may quit on a cold morning and work again after it warms up. A fresh battery is the simplest first test.
Checks to run, in order
Replace the remote battery
Chamberlain's remote support page lists this first. Make sure the battery sits in the right direction and the contacts are clean.
Move closer
Stand near the opener and press the button. If it works up close but not from the driveway, the signal is weak.
Look for LED interference
Chamberlain lists LED light bulbs as a possible source of interference. Try turning off or swapping a bulb near the opener.
Replace the keypad battery
If the keypad is the one failing, open it and fit a fresh battery of the type your manual names, then enter your code again.
Reprogram
Use the opener's learn button and your manual to program the remote or keypad again. If a new remote will not program, the opener's receiver may be the problem.
Quick answers
Why does my garage door open with the wall button but not the remote?
Most often the remote battery is weak or the signal is poor. Replace the battery, move closer to the opener and check for LED bulb interference, as Chamberlain suggests.
Why won't my garage door remote work?
Start with a fresh battery in the right direction. If that fails, try standing close to the opener, then reprogram the remote. If it still will not pair, the remote or the opener's receiver may need service.
Why did my garage door remote stop working?
A dead battery is the usual reason. Interference from LED bulbs, a remote that lost its programming or a failed receiver are other possibilities. Work through the checks in order.
Does cold weather affect garage door remotes?
Batteries are built for a temperature range, and a weak one can fail in a cold garage. Energizer's 9-volt alkaline datasheet, for one, lists a range down to minus 18 degrees Celsius. A fresh battery is the first test.
Safety first
If the door is stuck, crooked or the opener runs but the door does not move, stop. Do not adjust a spring or cable, and do not bypass the safety sensors to make the door close. A remote problem is a battery problem. A door problem is a technician problem.
When to call
Call if a fresh battery, a short distance and a reprogram do not help, if a new remote will not pair, or if several remotes and the keypad all failed together. We can test the receiver and the remotes, and supply new ones. See remotes and parts. For the yearly battery habit, read the maintenance checklist.
