A bent or misaligned track shows up as scraping, a door that jams or hangs crooked, or rollers that lift out of the track. You can look and tighten loose track bolts. Clopay says not to repair damaged tracks yourself. Stop using the door if it sags, rubs hard or a roller leaves the track.

The full explanation
What tracks do, and why a small bend matters
The two tracks guide the rollers so the door rises and lowers in a straight, controlled path. DASMA points out that the track and the sections work together as a system. When a track is bent, twisted or pulled away from the wall, the rollers bind or jump, and the opener and the springs work against the problem.
A door that comes off its track can drop or fall. Treat any track problem as a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

Signs of a bent or misaligned track
| What you see or hear | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Scraping, grinding or screeching along one side | A bent track, or rollers rubbing on a bent flange | Stop and have it inspected |
| A visible gap between the rollers and the track | Loose brackets or a weakened track | Stop using the door; call |
| The door hangs crooked or will not close fully | Loose track bolts or a track out of line | Check for loose bolts, then call |
| Banging or popping as the door moves | Brackets loosening from the wall | Stop using the door; call |
| The door jerks or stops partway | A creased track or a roller stuck in a bend | Do not force it; call |
Creative Door lists these as signs the tracks need professional attention.
Five checks you can do safely
- Close the door and look along each track from the front. Both should look straight, flat and parallel to each other.
- Look for creases, dents or twists, especially low on the track where a bumper or a car may have hit it.
- Check the track bolts and brackets for looseness. Clopay says you can tighten loose bolts with a wrench, socket or screwdriver, but not so hard that you strip them.
- Clean the track with a damp cloth and clear any grit. Do not oil it; see what to lubricate and what to leave dry.
- Open the door slowly by hand only if it is safe: pull the red release cord with the door closed, lift halfway and see whether it stays put. If it feels heavy or moves unevenly, lower it and stop.
Clopay says not to repair damaged tracks yourself, and DASMA says bottom brackets are under extreme spring tension and should be loosened only by a trained technician. Hammering a track, or loosening a bracket, can drop the door.
Repair or replace the track?
Creative Door says repair is often possible when the bend is minor, the rollers move smoothly once the track is aligned, and the hardware is loose rather than damaged. Replacement is usually safer when the track is severely bent, creased or cracked, the door has come off the track, or a vehicle hit it.
Our off-track repair price range is $175 to $450 and depends on bent tracks, damaged panels or rollers. We confirm the final price after we see the door. If the door is already off the track, read is an off-track garage door safe to use.
What causes tracks to go out of line
- A bump from a car or a bin
- Loose bolts from years of vibration
- Rollers that wore out and let the door rub the track
- Dirt or sand in the track
- A door that was out of balance for a long time, which pulls on the hardware

When to call
Call if you see a gap between the roller and the track, a crease in the metal, a crooked door or a track pulling off the wall. Do not use the opener on a door that rubs or sags, because it adds load to damaged hardware. A bent track is often found together with worn rollers or a loose bracket, which is why we check the whole door. See garage door repair.
