Press and release the Learn button on the opener, then within 30 seconds press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks. For a keypad, enter a four-digit PIN and hold ENTER. Steps vary by brand and Learn button color, so check your manual first.
Before you start
These steps follow Chamberlain Group support guidance for LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. Other brands use different buttons, so open your manual if yours is different. You will need a ladder and, for some models, a second person.
Find the Learn button on the motor head, above the antenna wire hanging from it, sometimes under the light cover. Its color tells you the opener's technology and which remotes fit it: green, red or orange, purple (which may look brown) or yellow. Faded buttons can look different. Match the remote to the color before you buy. See remotes and parts.

Program a remote with the Learn button
Clear the area
Make sure nothing and nobody is in the door's path. Stand on a stable ladder.
Press and release Learn
On purple, red or orange, and green models, the Learn light stays on for 30 seconds. On yellow models it stays on for up to 2 minutes.
Press and hold the remote button
Within that window, press and hold the button you want to program until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.
Release and test
Stand clear and press the button. The door should move.
Repeat for each remote
Program every remote one at a time, since each button needs its own pass.
Program a keypad PIN
Press and release Learn
The Learn light comes on and you have 30 seconds.
Enter a four-digit PIN
Use a number you will remember, and avoid easy codes like a street number.
Hold ENTER
Press and hold ENTER until the opener light blinks. That means the PIN is set.
Test it
Enter the PIN, press ENTER and watch the door.
Some keypads, such as the 940EV and 877MAX, have their own sequence with the # and * keys. Chamberlain keeps separate instructions for them, so use your keypad's manual.
Some remotes need an extra step
Remotes such as the 953EV and 893MAX first need to be set to your opener's technology. Hold the remote's own program button until its light turns on, then press the remote button the number of times shown below, and finish with the Learn button steps.
| Learn button color | Technology | Presses on the remote |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Security+ 2.0 | 1 |
| Purple or brown | Security+ 315MHz | 2 |
| Red or orange | Security+ 390MHz | 3 |
| Green | Billion Code 390MHz | 4 |

What to avoid
- Do not hold the Learn button down. Holding it until the light turns off erases every remote and keypad on the opener.
- Do not buy a remote that does not match your Learn button color.
- Do not program with the door moving or with people in its path.
- Do not share the PIN for a long time. Change it when a tenant, guest or contractor no longer needs it.
Replace the remote battery, check that the remote matches the opener, and try again from the start. If the opener's lights do not respond to the Learn button, see remote not working or keypad not working.
