Start with the battery, because a weak battery is the most common reason a wireless garage door keypad stops working. If the buttons light up but the door does not move, the code may be wrong or the keypad may no longer be paired with the opener. Reprogram it using your keypad's manual, and call a technician if the remote and wall button fail too.
Quick answers
How do I reprogram a LiftMaster or Chamberlain keypad?
Press the Learn button on the opener, then enter a new PIN on the keypad and confirm as the manual shows. The exact steps depend on the keypad model and the opener's Learn button color, so follow your keypad's manual.
Why does my garage door keypad light up but not open the door?
The code may be wrong, the battery may be too weak to send a signal, or the keypad may have lost its pairing, for example after the opener's memory was cleared.
What battery does a garage door keypad use?
Many wireless keypads use one 9-volt battery, such as Chamberlain's CH348, but check the battery door on your model.
Do I need to reprogram my remotes if I reset the keypad?
Resetting only the keypad does not touch your remotes. Clearing the opener's memory does erase them, so reprogram everything afterwards.
The full explanation
Start with the battery
Wireless keypads run on a small battery inside the housing. Chamberlain's CH348 keypad, for example, takes one 9-volt battery, and many other models use one too. Check the battery door on yours, because some use a different cell.
A weak battery does not always switch the keypad off. The buttons may glow but send a signal too faint for the opener to hear. So swap in a fresh battery even if the lights still come on, make sure the contacts are clean and snap the cover back firmly.

Match the symptom to the cause
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing lights up | Dead battery or loose contacts | Fit a fresh battery and clean the contacts |
| Lights up, door does not move | Wrong code, or the keypad is no longer paired to the opener | Try the code slowly, then reprogram |
| Works only when you stand close | Weak battery or radio interference | Replace the battery, then test from the driveway |
| Stopped after the opener's memory was cleared | Clearing memory erases the keypad too | Reprogram the keypad and your remotes |
| Keypad, remote and wall button all fail | The problem is the opener or its power, not the keypad | Check the outlet, then see the remote post below |
A keypad is a small radio transmitter. If other controls work, the opener is fine and the keypad is the weak link.
Five checks, in order
- Replace the battery with a fresh one and test the keypad from the driveway.
- Look at the keypad: cracked housing, wet buttons or green corrosion on the battery contacts all cut the signal. Dry and clean it, or replace it.
- Enter your code slowly and press the enter key as your manual says. A keypad that never received the right code will not send anything.
- Try the remote and the wall button. If they work, the opener is fine and the keypad needs reprogramming.
- Reprogram the keypad to the opener using the steps in its manual (see below).
Reprogramming and the PIN
Keypads are paired to the opener with the Learn button on the motor unit. LiftMaster's 877MAX keypad, for example, uses a personal four-digit PIN and works with openers by their Learn button color. The exact button sequence depends on the keypad and the opener, so follow your keypad's manual rather than a generic video. See how to program a garage door remote for the general idea.
Holding the Learn button to erase the opener's memory removes every remote and keypad that was paired. Only do it if you are ready to reprogram all of them. Chamberlain uses this step when a stranger's remote has been paired by mistake.
When the keypad is not the problem
If the keypad, remotes and wall button all fail, check that the opener has power and that nothing has tripped the outlet. A remote that stopped working on its own is covered in garage door remote not working. If the opener hums but the door does not move, or the door feels heavy, the issue is mechanical, not electronic. See opener repair.
Test the door after any change
After you reprogram anything, run the monthly safety tests in garage door safety tests. Stop using a door that is heavy, crooked or does not reverse, and have a technician look at it.
