If the opener light will not come on, replace the bulb first, because a burned-out bulb is the usual cause. If it stays on, check whether the light button was pressed, a motion setting is active or the safety beam keeps getting crossed. If a new bulb does not help, the socket or logic board needs a technician.
How the light is meant to behave
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers the light comes on when the door moves and stays lit for a set time. Chamberlain gives the standard delay as 4-1/2 minutes, and some door controls let you change it. So a light that stays on for a few minutes after you pull in is normal.
A light that stays on far beyond that, or never comes on, points to one of the causes below.

Light will not turn on
- Replace the bulb. Chamberlain says a burned-out bulb is the usual reason the light will not turn on.
- Use a bulb that fits the opener's label. Chamberlain lists a maximum of 100 watts per bulb.
- Check that the opener has power and that the outlet or breaker has not tripped.
- If a new bulb does not help, the light socket or the logic board is at fault. Chamberlain's test is to unplug the opener, plug it back in and listen for the light relay on the board to click. A click points to the socket, and no click points to the logic board.
Unplug the opener or switch off its circuit before changing a bulb, keep the ladder clear of the door's path, and leave the socket and logic board to a technician. Never work under a door that is moving or heavy.
Light will not turn off
| Cause | How to tell | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light button pressed | Wall control light button is lit or was pressed | Press and release the button again |
| Motion detection | The light stays on while you are in the garage | Switch the feature off on the door control, if yours has it |
| Safety beam crossed | You walk past the sensors while the door is open | Stay out of the beam, or note Chamberlain says openers made after February 2022 no longer have this feature |
| Door control or wiring fault | Light goes off with the control disconnected | A technician tests and replaces the control or wire |
| Logic board fault | Light stays on with the control disconnected | The logic board needs replacing |

Flicker and short range after a bulb change
If the remote loses range after you fit a new LED bulb, the bulb may be sending radio noise. LiftMaster sells an opener LED bulb that it says is designed to minimize radio frequency interference. If your remote seems weaker, swap the bulb back and test again. See remote not working for other causes.
Flashing opener lights can also mean the door hit something while closing. Chamberlain says the opener then reverses, beeps and flashes the lights 5 times. That points to a blocked path or sensors, not the bulb. See why a garage door will not close.
Quick answers
Why does my garage door opener light stay on?
The light button may have been pressed, a motion setting may be active, or you may be crossing the safety beam. If it still stays on with the door control disconnected, the logic board is the likely fault.
Why won't my garage door opener light turn on?
A burned-out bulb is the usual reason. If a new bulb does not help, the socket or the logic board is at fault and a technician should test them.
How long should the opener light stay on?
Chamberlain gives a standard delay of 4-1/2 minutes, and some door controls can change it.
What size bulb can I use in a garage door opener?
Chamberlain lists a maximum of 100 watts per bulb. Check the label on your opener and use a bulb made for opener use if you can.
What a technician checks
A technician can tell a socket fault from a logic board fault in a few minutes with the relay test above, and can check the wall control and its wire. If the opener is old, it may be a good moment to compare options in repair or replace the opener.
