If the wall button works but the remote does not, check lock mode on the wall control first, then replace the remote battery, test the range, reprogram the remote and try a second remote. Chamberlain Group support lists these six steps in that order. Most remote problems are a battery, lock mode or a cleared opener memory.
Why the wall button works but the remote does not
The wall button is wired to the opener, and the remote is a small radio transmitter. When only the remote fails, the problem is the remote, the signal or the opener's memory. It is rarely the door.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Opener lights flash twice when you press the remote | Lock mode is on at the wall control | Turn lock mode off |
| Remote is dead or weak | Worn battery | Replace the battery |
| Works only close to the opener | Range or radio interference | Test from several spots; check LED bulbs |
| Never worked, or nothing works at any distance | Remote not programmed, or the memory was cleared | Reprogram the remote |
| All remotes quit together | Interference or an opener issue | Reprogram each; look for new interference |

Six checks in order
Did it ever work?
If the remote is new, confirm it matches your opener. Chamberlain says compatibility depends on the color of the opener's Learn button. See how to program a garage door remote.
Check lock mode
When lock mode (vacation mode) is on, the opener ignores remotes. The opener lights flash twice when you press a remote button, and the wall control's light keeps flashing. Press and hold the Lock button on the wall control until the light stops flashing or turns solid.
Replace the battery
Many remotes use a 3V CR2032 coin battery. Check the contacts for corrosion, match the polarity marks and test again.
Test the range
Stand right under the opener and press the button, then move away and test from several spots. If it works only up close, radio interference may be cutting the range. Chamberlain points to LED light bulbs as one source.
Reprogram the remote
If the opener's memory was cleared, the remote needs to be programmed again. Chamberlain says holding the Learn button until its light turns off erases all remotes and keypads.
Try another remote
If a second remote works, the first one is the problem: replace its battery, reprogram it, or buy a compatible one.

What cleared the opener's memory
A common cause is that someone held the Learn button on the opener until its light went out. That erases every remote and keypad, so you will need to program each one again.
A remote that works only up close
If the remote works only when you stand near the opener, look at what changed. Chamberlain points to LED light bulbs as one source of radio interference. Try a different bulb. If the range is still short, a new remote may help. See remotes and parts.
Safety: do not bypass anything to make the door move
Keep using the wall button while you sort out the remote. If the door itself will not close or reverses, do not bypass the safety sensors. See why a garage door will not close and call a technician.

When to call
Call if no remote works after reprogramming, if the wall button fails too, or if the door misbehaves. Emil Garage Doors repairs openers and sells remotes and keypads in Southern California, for example in Vista and Seaside, and our city pages also cover Fremont. Call (213) 340-4232 or use the estimate form, and see opener repair.
Questions people ask
Why does my garage door open with the wall button but not the remote?
The remote may have a dead battery, the opener may be in lock mode, the remote may be out of range or not programmed, or the opener's memory may have been cleared.
Why did my garage door remote stop working?
The usual causes are a worn battery, lock mode on the wall control, radio interference or a cleared opener memory. Work through the six checks above in order.
Why won't my garage door remote work?
If it is new, it may not match your opener's Learn button color or may not be programmed. If it used to work, start with the battery and lock mode.
How do I know if lock mode is on?
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers, the opener lights flash twice when you press a remote button and the wall control's light flashes. Hold the Lock button on the wall control to turn it off.
