On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, a beep every 2 seconds means the opener is running on its backup battery, and a beep every 30 seconds means the battery is low or dead. A run of beeps before the door closes is a timer-to-close warning, and beeps with five light flashes mean the door hit something.

1Start with the pattern
The pattern of the beeps tells you the cause. Chamberlain Group, which makes LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, lists the meanings on its support page. Your model may differ, so check the manual, but these patterns cover most homes.
| What you hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Beep every 2 seconds, battery light solid orange | The opener is running on its backup battery | Check whether household power is back on |
| Beep every 30 seconds, battery light flashing orange | The backup battery is low | Test the outlet; replace the battery if it does not recover |
| Beep every 30 seconds, battery light solid red | The backup battery is dead and cannot recharge | Replace the battery |
| Beeping for 8 seconds before the door closes | Timer-to-close is warning that the door is about to move | Nothing to fix |
| Beep and five light flashes while closing | The door hit an object and reversed | Clear the path, then check the sensors |
From Chamberlain Group support guidance. Other brands and older models differ.
2The backup battery beeps
California requires a backup battery on residential openers sold or installed since July 1, 2019, so many homes now have one. Chamberlain says the first thing to check is whether the home has power. If power is back and the light stays orange, plug another device into the outlet to test it. A low or dead battery needs to be replaced. See opener battery backup replacement and the California battery backup law.
Chamberlain also notes that unplugging the unit, disconnecting the battery and plugging the unit back in silences the beeping for now. The battery still needs to be replaced.
3Beeps when the door closes by itself
If your opener has timer-to-close, or you close the door from an app, the opener beeps and flashes the lights before it moves. Chamberlain lists it as a warning, and it is normal. Wi-Fi models also beep during setup, for example three fast beeps when the Wi-Fi settings were erased.
4Beeps that mean a problem
Five light flashes with the beeps mean the door hit an object, either while closing or while opening. Clear anything in the path and check that the sensor lenses are clean and lit. For blinking lights and other codes, read LiftMaster blinking light codes. A door that reverses on its own can have a travel or force problem; see why an opener keeps reversing.
5Four checks in order
- Note when it beeps: after an outage, before the door closes, or when the door hits something.
- Look at the battery light on the opener and the pattern of the beeps against the table.
- Check household power by plugging another device into the same outlet.
- Look for a nearby smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm or other device with a low battery. Chamberlain lists them as a source of beeping that is not the opener.
The beeps and light flashes warn people near the door. Do not bypass a sensor or disconnect the safety system to stop them. If the door hits objects or will not close, have a technician look at it.

6When to call
Call if the beeping continues after a new battery and a power check, if the door reverses with no clear cause, or if the door is heavy by hand. Emil Garage Doors repairs openers in Southern California, for example in Diamond Bar and Mission Viejo, and our city pages also cover West Sacramento. Call (213) 340-4232 or use the estimate form, and see opener repair.
Questions people ask
Why is my garage door opener beeping every 2 seconds?
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers with a backup battery, a beep every 2 seconds means the opener is running on battery power, usually during an outage. Check whether household power is back.
Why does my opener beep every 30 seconds?
That points to the backup battery. A flashing orange battery light means the battery is low, and a solid red light means it is dead and must be replaced.
Why does my garage door opener beep before it closes?
Timer-to-close, and some app or monitor closes, warn with beeping and flashing lights before the door moves. That is normal.
Why does my opener beep when the remote does not work?
Beeping and a remote that does not work can be unrelated. Check the opener's power and battery pattern first, then see the remote checks in our remote guide.
