How Much Does a New Garage Door Cost in Utah?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 5 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

An insulated steel 16x7 door costs $1,800 to $3,600 installed, and a non-insulated steel door of that size costs $1,400 to $2,400. A single 9x7 steel door is $1,100 to $2,200. Carriage house, wood, modern and glass doors cost more. Size, insulation, windows and color move the price, and we confirm it after we measure.

Upgrades and special orders

Some choices are priced on top of the door. An insulated glass upgrade adds $400 to $1,200, and a custom color such as powder coat, anodized finish or stain adds $300 to $1,200. A custom size or special order adds 20% to 40%, and the lead time is 4 to 8 weeks.

How much insulation do you need?

Clopay says doors with polystyrene insulation are typically R-6 to R-10, and polyurethane doors can reach R-12 to R-18. It suggests a minimum of about R-10 to R-13 for northern regions, and says the savings are most noticeable when the garage is attached to the house. If the garage is also a workshop or laundry room, it needs better insulation and weather protection.

R-value is only part of the picture. DASMA explains that an R-value is calculated for one door section, while a tested U-factor measures the whole installed door, with its joints and seals, and the two are not comparable. If you are comparing doors for a heated garage, ask for the tested U-factor when the maker publishes one.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the door and the opening, so we confirm the schedule when we measure. A stock door goes in sooner than a special order, and special orders have a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks before installation starts. Ask for the date in writing.

What a good quote includes

  1. The door model, size, color and window layout
  2. Track, hinges, rollers and springs for that door
  3. Removal of the old door
  4. Installation, balancing and a test of the door and opener
  5. Total price and when payment is due

The Utah Division of Consumer Protection advises a written agreement with the price estimate, the work and the materials, and a receipt for any payment. The Utah Insurance Department says to get at least three written estimates, compare the bids and not pay for work upfront.

Rules differ from one city to the next, and homeowner associations often control door style and color. Check your city building department and your HOA documents before you order, so the door you choose is allowed. We can give you the door size, style and color for the paperwork.

Replace or repair?

A repair may be enough when

  • One section, a spring or a cable is the problem
  • The panels are straight and the door runs smoothly
  • A matching part is available

A new door makes more sense when

  • Several panels are dented, creased or rotted
  • The door keeps going out of balance
  • You want insulation or a different style
