Smart Garage Door Openers: myQ, Wi-Fi and What Works

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Openers and remotes

Short answer

A smart garage door opener connects to your home Wi-Fi so you can open, close and check the door from a phone app. You can buy one with Wi-Fi built in, such as a myQ or Genie Aladdin Connect model, or add a hub to many older openers. It adds convenience but does not replace the safety sensors.

Quick answers

Is a smart garage door opener worth it?

It is worth it if you want to check or close the door from your phone. It adds convenience, not safety: the sensors and the monthly tests still matter.

Why does my smart opener beep before it closes?

Chamberlain Group says the Smart Garage Hub is required by UL 325 to alert bystanders before the door closes from the app. The feature cannot be disabled.

Can I make my existing garage door opener smart?

Often yes. Chamberlain Group says its Smart Garage Hub works with most brands of openers made after 1993. Check its compatibility list for your model.

Does a smart opener work with Alexa or Google Home?

It depends on the brand and model, and support has changed over time. Check the maker's current compatibility page for your exact opener.

The full explanation

What makes an opener smart

There are two routes. Some new openers have Wi-Fi built in. LiftMaster's 6690L belt-drive model, for example, works with the myQ app, and Genie's Chain Glide Connect (model 2033) has Aladdin Connect built in. The other route is a hub that plugs into an existing opener. Chamberlain Group says its Smart Garage Hub works with most brands of openers made after 1993 and points to a compatibility list to check first.

Either way, the app talks to the opener over your Wi-Fi. Wall controls and remotes still do the everyday work.

What the app does

  • Opens and closes the door from anywhere with a signal
  • Shows whether the door is open or closed
  • Tracks activity, so you can see when it moved (Genie describes this for Aladdin Connect)

Why the door beeps before it closes

When you close the door from the app, it beeps first. Chamberlain Group says the Smart Garage Hub is required by safety regulation UL 325 to alert bystanders that the door is about to close, and that this feature cannot be disabled. A beep that never stops is different: the maker says it can mean the door sensor was removed or fell off. See sensor lights blinking.

Wi-Fi range and setup

The hub must be within 50 feet of your Wi-Fi router, according to Chamberlain Group, and a weak signal in the garage may need the router moved or an extender. A garage at the far end of the house is the usual problem. If the app will not connect, see why a myQ opener will not connect.

Voice assistants and other apps

Check the current list before you buy

Support for voice assistants and third-party smart home apps differs by brand and model and has changed over time. Look at the maker's current compatibility page for your exact model rather than relying on an older review or a store listing.

Is it worth it?

It is worth it if you often forget to close the door, want to check it from work or let people in while you are away. It is less useful if you never leave the house with the door in doubt. Smart features add to the price of a new opener; they are one of the things we list as changing it. A belt-drive opener installed with battery backup runs $550 to $900 with us, confirmed after we see the door. See opener installation and brands compared.

Keep the basics in place

A phone app does not replace the safety reversing sensors or the monthly auto-reverse test. Use a strong, unique password for the app account, and run the checks in garage door safety tests after any change. In California, a new residential opener also needs a battery backup, so a smart model is not a way around that rule.
