Short answer

LiftMaster and Chamberlain are both Chamberlain Group brands. Chamberlain models are sold through retail partners for do-it-yourself installation, while LiftMaster models are made for professional installation and sold through authorized dealers. Genie is a separate brand owned by Overhead Door Corporation. Choose by door weight, noise, smart features and who will install it.

Who makes what

Chamberlain Group makes both LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. Genie is a different maker: the Genie Company is a division of Overhead Door Corporation, which bought it in 1994.

That means two of the three names share a maker, and the real difference between them is the sales channel, not a different kind of motor.

LiftMaster vs Chamberlain

LiftMaster

  • Designed for professional installation
  • Sold through authorized dealers
  • Lines include a compact side-mount opener and a heavy-duty 3/4 HP model with an I-beam rail for large carriage house doors
  • Smart control through the myQ app on connected models

Chamberlain

  • Sold through retail partners such as Home Depot or Lowe's
  • Designed for the do-it-yourself customer
  • Made by the same company as LiftMaster
  • Check the model page for smart features and limits

These points come from Chamberlain Group's own support FAQ. Model features change, so check the exact model page.

Where Genie differs

Genie sells chain, belt, screw and wall-mount openers, and its smart system is called Aladdin Connect. As one example, the Genie Chain Glide Connect (model 2033) has a 1/2 HPc DC motor and built-in Aladdin Connect. Genie says it fits residential sectional doors up to 7 feet high and 500 pounds, and an 8-foot door needs an extension kit. A model page like that is where to check a limit that matters for your door.

What does not differ

The rules are the same for all three. Residential openers sold or installed in California need a battery backup under Health and Safety Code section 19892, and openers have had to include entrapment protection since 1993. So whichever brand you pick, test the auto-reverse monthly. See the safety tests and the battery backup law.

Each maker also sells more than one drive type, so brand does not decide whether you get belt, chain or wall-mount. See opener types compared.

Warranty and model details

Warranties vary by model, so compare them line by line. For instance, LiftMaster lists its 6690L belt-drive model with a lifetime motor and belt warranty and 5-year parts. Do not assume another model carries the same terms. Ask for the exact model number on every quote.

How to choose

  • Door weight and height: match the motor rating and limits to the door
  • Bedroom near the garage: look at belt-drive or DC models
  • Installing it yourself, or paying an installer: this is where Chamberlain and LiftMaster split
  • Smart control: myQ on LiftMaster and Chamberlain, Aladdin Connect on Genie. See smart openers explained
  • Battery backup included and listed on the quote

Verdict: no brand wins on every point. Pick the model that fits your door and your installer, not the logo.
