Newer houses, duplexes and small apartment buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Calexico was built in 1993, newer than in most California cities. About 50 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 50 percent are rented. About 62 percent of homes are detached houses and another 5 percent are attached, so roughly two in three homes have their own garage, while a good share of the rest are in buildings with 2 to 19 units. Springs are rated for a set number of open-and-close cycles, and a door installed around 1993 has had thirty years of use.
Calexico began as a tent city of the Imperial Land Company, founded in 1899, and incorporated on April 16, 1908, according to Wikipedia. Two landmarks show the older core: the Calexico Carnegie Library at 420 Heber Avenue, built in 1918 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and the Hotel De Anza at 233 East Fourth Street. State Routes 98, 7 and 111 serve the city. We could not verify any named homeowners association or gated community.
When an owner and tenants share a building, we confirm who can approve the work before a visit. Tell us the cross street and whether the door belongs to a house, a duplex or a shared lot, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

What Calexico conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Calexico, which cites Intellicast and names no station, puts the average daily high at 107 degrees in July and 106 in August, with a record high of 122 degrees in July and about 2.96 inches of rain a year. The nearest official station figures are for El Centro, about 10 miles north: the National Weather Service Phoenix table lists an average of 116 days a year at 100 degrees or above there for 1991-2020. That is nearby El Centro data, not Calexico data. Heat dries out rubber seals and lubricant.
On August 12, 2026, the National Weather Service reported storm winds, a large dust storm, more than 150 power poles compromised according to the Imperial Irrigation District and more than 5,000 customers without power at one point, and it lists Calexico among the hardest-hit communities. On September 18, 2025, Tropical Storm Mario led Calexico to declare a state of emergency for localized flooding, according to the Imperial Valley Press. The April 4, 2010 magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused moderate to heavy damage in Calexico, according to Wikipedia, and a door that sticks or sits crooked after shaking should be checked.
Before summer, wipe dust out of the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges and look at the bottom seal. If the power goes out, use the manual release, and call us rather than lifting a door you think has a broken spring.
- Wipe dust out of the tracks
- Let the door dry out after flooding
- Know where the manual release is

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Calexico
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Calexico is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Calexico. Its Development Services pages include a Building page and planning forms, but they did not show garage door rules, and we could not confirm whether a door or opener replacement needs a permit. The city lists City Hall at 608 Heber Avenue, open Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm, with the main line (760) 768-2110. Call and ask for the Building Division, or look at calexico.ca.gov.
Older buildings and associations. Calexico has historic properties such as the Carnegie Library, but we found no historic district, hillside or fire hazard zone rule for homes, and we could not verify any. If your home is old or in a subdivision with an association, check its door rules before you order.

Calexico garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Calexico?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Calexico (ZIP 92231) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Calexico?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Calexico?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Calexico?
Calexico homes use ZIP code 92231. ZIP code 92232 is for PO boxes only, according to zip-codes.com. We also serve nearby Heber, El Centro, Imperial and Holtville, so call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement in Calexico need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Calexico, because the city pages we found do not cover it. Call City Hall at (760) 768-2110 and ask for the Building Division to find out whether your door or opener work needs a permit.
What should I do with my garage door after a Calexico storm or power outage?
If the power is out, use the manual release. If water got in, let the door, tracks and opener dry out before you run them. If the door sticks, sits crooked or makes a new noise, stop using it and call us, because a damaged spring or cable is dangerous to lift by hand.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Calexico?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
