Tree-lined streets, college neighborhoods and 1960s houses
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year estimates, the median home in Claremont was built in 1966. About 68 percent of the 12,530 housing units are detached single-family houses, about 63 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and only 15 homes are mobile homes. A median that old means original springs, rollers and openers have been through decades of use.
A 1902 town meeting set the numbering of the east-west streets and named the north-south streets after colleges and universities. Pomona College moved to Claremont in 1890, the Claremont Colleges now include seven institutions, and The Village lies west of the colleges. Indian Hill Boulevard is lined with elms near Memorial Park, and Claremont has won the Tree City USA award for many years.
Claremont's older neighborhoods have homes of many eras, and no source we found gives a breakdown by style, so we do not guess a door from a street name. We weigh and balance each door and check the springs, cables, rollers and opener before we quote.
- Original springs and openers on 1960s houses
- Balance checks on older doors
- Opener upgrades with battery backup

The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review
My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

What Claremont weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's Claremont climate table, taken from Weather.com with no station named, gives mean daily highs of 90 degrees in July and 92 in August and about 17 inches of rain a year, with February the wettest month. The NOAA Pomona/Fairplex station, about five miles away, shows 14.5 inches for 1991-2020, so expect roughly 14 to 17 inches a year. Summer heat dries out rollers and hinges, and winter rain collects in the lower tracks.
A windstorm on January 21 and 22, 2022 brought gusts of up to 65 miles per hour. KNX reported that up to 20 percent of Claremont lost power, the Webb Canyon Chronicle reported about 4,000 people without power the first night and more than 300 trees to remove, and some residents reported four days without power. A door with no power needs its manual release, and a battery backup keeps the opener working through an outage.
After a windy spell, wipe dust and leaves off the tracks and check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other. Twice a year, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup.
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Wipe tracks and sensors after wind
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Claremont
Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
Permits. The Building Division is at City Hall, 207 Harvard Avenue; the main line is (909) 399-5460 and the Building Official's line is (909) 399-5477 (confirm which line to call). The city's 'When do I need a permit?' page lists 'window and door installation' as needing a permit, but it does not name garage doors or openers and says its lists are not all-inclusive, so we could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. The page gives (909) 399-5471 and buildingapplications@claremontca.gov for questions; the city's staff list shows the 5471 line as vacant, so confirm before relying on it.
Fire and historic note. The city's fire page says the Los Angeles County Fire Department runs brush clearance for Claremont, that properties in the High or Very High zones get annual notices, and it calls portions of northern Claremont High-zone land. The State Fire Marshal's 2025 recommended map lists 3,188 acres of Claremont as Very High, down from 4,158 acres in 2011. We could not reconcile the two, so ask the city about your address. The city's page on cultural resources describes only a proposed preservation ordinance and draft design guidelines, without saying whether they were adopted, and the LA Conservancy says homes on the Claremont Register and in four historic districts have design-review protection. If your home may be in one, ask the city before changing a door's style.

Claremont garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Claremont?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Claremont (ZIP 91711) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Claremont?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Claremont?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Claremont?
Claremont uses ZIP code 91711 only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Claremont require a permit to replace a garage door?
We could not confirm it. The city's permit page lists 'window and door installation' as needing a permit but does not name garage doors or openers, and says its lists are not all-inclusive. Call the Building Division at (909) 399-5460 before the work.
Is Claremont in a high fire hazard zone?
The State Fire Marshal's 2025 recommended map lists 3,188 acres of Claremont as Very High, and the city's fire page describes portions of northern Claremont as High-zone land. Ask the city about your address, and keep the tracks and sensors clean and the opener's battery backup working.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often deal with a dirty sensor or a worn roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and can injure someone, so they need a trained technician. Call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Claremont?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
