Citrus-era streets and 1970s homes on the foothill slope
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year estimates, the median Upland home was built in 1978. About 57 percent of homes are owner-occupied, about 58 percent of housing units are detached single-family houses, about 20 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 3 percent are mobile homes.
Upland takes its name from the Upland Citrus Association and became a city in 1906. According to Wikipedia the city climbs about 825 feet over 4.25 miles, from about 1,175 feet at 7th Street and Euclid Avenue to about 2,000 feet at 24th Street. Euclid Avenue is State Route 83 with a three-mile center Bridle Path, and Foothill Boulevard was part of U.S. Route 66, with the Madonna of the Trail standing at Foothill and Euclid.
A house from the late 1970s can still have its original springs, rollers and opener. We test the balance of each door and check that the photo-eye sensors near the floor still face each other, which matters on driveways that slope.
- Original springs and rollers on 1970s homes
- Sensors and bottom seals on sloped driveways
- Opener replacement with battery backup

What Upland weather does to a garage door
According to Wikipedia's climate table for Upland, which cites Weather.com data for ZIP 91786, July highs average about 92 degrees and August about 94, and the record high is 113 degrees, set in July 2006. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Ontario International Airport, a few miles south-southeast, show August highs near 95 degrees and about 11.6 inches of rain a year. Heat dries out lubricant, and summer dust settles in the tracks.
During the Santa Ana windstorm of January 21 and 22, 2022, KTLA reported that powerful winds knocked out power in parts of Claremont and Upland, and CBS Los Angeles reported that a tree fell onto the trailer of a semi-truck in Upland. Santa Ana winds hit the area frequently in autumn and winter, according to Wikipedia's Ontario page, so a manual release and a working battery backup matter.
After a windy spell, wipe dust and leaves off the tracks and look at the two sensors near the floor. Twice a year, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup.
- Wipe tracks and sensors after wind
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer

Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review

Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
Upland Building and Safety. Upland is its own city, so its Building and Safety office at 460 N. Euclid Avenue sets its rules. The Building Department number is (909) 931-4110 (option 1 for a permit technician) and the city main line is (909) 931-4100; the counter is open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Building permits are accepted online through the city's Citizen Self Service portal. The city links a list of projects that need no building permit under Section 105 of the California Building Code, but we could not tell whether it covers garage doors or openers, so ask before a replacement or an opener swap.
Fire map note. Parts of Upland are served by San Bernardino County Fire. An older CAL FIRE draft layer from 2011 shows parts of Upland's west and northwest edge in the Very High fire hazard zone; it is an older map, and we did not check the 2025 maps. Check your address with CAL FIRE or with San Bernardino County Fire Prevention at (909) 387-5974.

Upland garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Upland?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Upland (ZIP 91784 and 91786) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Upland?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Upland?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Upland?
Upland uses ZIP codes 91784 and 91786, and 91785 is for PO boxes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Is Upland in a high fire hazard zone?
Parts of Upland's foothill edge have been mapped as wildfire hazard zones by CAL FIRE. An older 2011 draft layer shows parts of the west and northwest edge in the Very High zone, and we did not check the 2025 maps, so check your address with CAL FIRE or San Bernardino County Fire Prevention at (909) 387-5974. Keep tracks and sensors clean in windy weather and keep the opener's battery backup working.
Does a garage door replacement need a permit in Upland?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. Ask the Upland Building Department at (909) 931-4110 whether your job is exempt under Section 105 of the California Building Code before the work starts.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a simple job like a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Upland?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
