Railroad-era homes, 1950s to 1980s tracts and hillside lots
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Colton was built in 1979. About 53 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, about 59 percent of all homes are detached single-family houses, and about one in five sits in a building with five or more units. Doors from the 1970s and 1980s often still run on their original springs, rollers and openers.
Colton's nickname is the Hub City. The modern town grew when the Southern Pacific Railway built east from Los Angeles in 1875, and the city incorporated in 1887. Housing runs from older railroad-era homes near downtown to tracts from the 1950s to the 1980s and apartments, with hillside homes in Reche Canyon and the La Loma Hills. We could not verify any named homeowners association or planned community.
With homes of so many ages, we do not guess from the street. We inspect the whole door, replace worn springs, cables and rollers together, and add a battery backup when an old opener is replaced.
- Original parts on 1970s and 1980s doors

What Colton conditions do to a garage door
Colton has no climate station that we could verify, so we do not quote temperature or rainfall figures for the city. Wikipedia classifies its climate as Mediterranean, with a dry summer. For context only, the airport station in nearby Riverside shows a July average high near 93 degrees and about 9 inches of rain a year, which is a Riverside figure, not a Colton one. Heat dries out lubricant and ages seals, and winter rain settles into the lower track.
Colton runs its own electric utility. On August 31, 2017, lightning hit the main substation and cut power and phone service to about 50,000 customers, according to Colton Public Utilities as reported by CBS LA; schools closed and cooling centers opened. That was lightning, not wind, and we found no record of a wind shutoff for Colton, but it shows why a manual release and a battery backup matter. In 2018 the city told the California Public Utilities Commission that Cal Fire had designated Reche Canyon and the La Loma Hills as high fire hazard areas.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup. If the door starts to lean or one side hangs low, stop using it and call us.
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Know where the manual release is

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Colton
Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Colton is its own city with its own Building and Safety Division, so its rules come from the City of Colton, not Los Angeles. The division's page does not mention garage doors, and two of its handouts, one on when a building permit is needed and one on window and door replacements, could not be read. We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule, so call Colton Building and Safety at (909) 370-5079 (the office is open Monday to Thursday, on North La Cadena Drive) before a replacement.
Fire hazard. In 2018 the City of Colton told the California Public Utilities Commission that Cal Fire had designated Reche Canyon and the La Loma Hills as high fire hazard areas. Whether your street is in one, and what that means for a door, we could not verify, so ask the city.

Colton garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Colton?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Colton (ZIP 92324) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Colton?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Colton?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Colton?
Colton homes use ZIP code 92324, the only ZIP listed for the city. We also serve nearby Rialto, San Bernardino, Loma Linda and Riverside, so call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement in Colton need a permit?
We could not verify a garage-door-specific permit rule for Colton. The city's Building and Safety page does not mention garage doors. Call Colton Building and Safety at (909) 370-5079 to ask whether your door or opener work needs a permit.
What should I do if the power goes out and my garage door is stuck in Colton?
Colton runs its own electric utility, and a lightning strike at its main substation in 2017 cut power to about 50,000 customers. When the power is out, use the manual release, and if you suspect a broken spring call us instead of lifting a heavy door by hand. A battery backup lets the opener lift the door during an outage.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Colton?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
