Why gates in Camarillo stop working
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The gate does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does nothing at all | No power, a tripped breaker or a dead battery | Check power, breaker and battery, then the control board |
| Motor hums, gate does not move | A binding gate, a worn gear or arm, or a failed capacitor | Free the gate, then repair or replace the failed part |
| Gate stops halfway or reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, a safety edge or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors, test the edge, reset the force |
| Gate sags or drags on the ground | Worn hinges, a post that has shifted or a heavy frame | Reset hinges and posts, brace or square the frame |
| Remote works only up close | A weak remote battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery, test the receiver and the range |
| Dead after a power cut | A drained or failed backup battery | Test and replace the battery, check the charger |
Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or damaged.

Mostly single-family homes built in the 1980s
Camarillo sits in Pleasant Valley at the east end of the Oxnard Plain. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey one-year estimates, the median home was built in 1984, about 53 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses, about 14 percent are attached homes such as townhomes and about 67 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
About one in five units is in a building of five or more units, so shared entries exist alongside private driveways. Wikipedia names the Leisure Village retirement community, which opened in 1973, and the Mission Oaks neighborhood. We could not confirm which Camarillo communities are gated or have HOAs, so check your own association's rules before you change a gate.
A gate on a home from the 1980s or 1990s may still have its original posts and hinges, with an operator that has been replaced once or twice. We start with the gate itself and then test the operator, sensors and keypad.
- Swing and sliding gates on 1980s and 1990s homes
- Shared entries at townhomes and apartments
- Operators, keypads and remotes that have aged

What Camarillo's weather does to a gate
Wikipedia's normals for Camarillo list mean daily highs near 78 to 80 degrees from July to September, a record high of 108 degrees and about 12 inches of rain a year. The climate is milder than in inland desert cities, which is easier on batteries and plastic parts, but wildfire and wind events have reached the area.
Wikipedia says the 2013 Springs Fire started near the Camarillo Springs Road exit, and news coverage reported evacuations of the Camarillo Springs area during that fire and again during the Hill Fire of November 2018. KCLU reported that Southern California Edison expanded power shutoffs to parts of Camarillo in October 2019. Evacuations, wind and outages all put pressure on an electric gate, which needs a healthy backup battery and a manual release that works.
Before fire season, replace aging backup batteries, confirm the manual release works and clean dust from the sensors.
- Replace aging backup batteries before fire season
- Confirm the manual release works
- Clean sensor lenses and check hinges after strong wind

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina Β· Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Camarillo
City permits. The City of Camarillo's Building and Safety Division is at 601 Carmen Drive, phone (805) 388-5395, and permits are applied for through the city's online OpenGov portal, linked from cityofcamarillo.org. The pages we read do not say whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule. Call the division before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire service. Ventura County Fire Department covers Camarillo. We could not confirm a gate-specific key switch or Knox box rule, so ask the department before you change a locked entry.
Emergency access. Fire and police need a way in. Before you install or change a locked entry, ask the local fire department about key switches and Knox boxes.
HOA review. Many associations review exterior changes such as gates. Check yours before you change a gate's design or color.
UL 325. This safety standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test them before we leave.

Camarillo gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Camarillo?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Camarillo (ZIP codes 93010 and 93012) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Camarillo?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Camarillo means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Camarillo?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
The gate is probably binding, or a gear, arm or capacitor has failed. Do not keep running it, because that can burn out the motor. Call us and we free the gate and test the operator.
How much does gate repair cost in Camarillo?
It depends on the gate type and the failed part. A remote, battery or sensor costs far less than a control board, an operator or a rebuilt post. We find the fault first, quote the price and start work only after you agree.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Camarillo?
Camarillo uses ZIP codes 93010 and 93012. The 93012 area also covers unincorporated Santa Rosa Valley, which is outside the city, and ZIP code 93011 is for PO boxes only. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Do power shutoffs and wildfire evacuations affect electric gates in Camarillo?
KCLU reported that Southern California Edison expanded power shutoffs to parts of Camarillo in October 2019, and news coverage reported evacuations of the Camarillo Springs area during the 2013 Springs Fire and the 2018 Hill Fire. An electric gate needs a healthy backup battery and a manual release you can find quickly. We test both and replace a battery that is weak.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Camarillo too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Camarillo for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
