If your gate is stuck open or closed, keep people and vehicles clear, look for an obstruction or alarm, check the power switch and try a second control. If it still will not move, use the manual release as your manual shows, move the gate slowly and secure the opening. Do not force the gate or bypass a sensor. Then call a technician.
Quick answers
What should I do if my electric gate is stuck open?
Keep people clear, check for an obstruction and the power, then use the manual release and close and latch the gate by hand. Call a technician for the repair.
What should I do if my gate is stuck closed?
Check the power, try another control and look for an obstruction. If needed, use the manual release, move the gate slowly and call a technician.
Is it safe to open an electric gate by hand?
Yes, if you release the operator as the manual shows, keep the path clear and move the gate slowly. A heavy gate can move freely once released.
Can I bypass the safety sensor to close the gate?
No. Safety sensors are required by UL 325 and must work. Clean and realign them instead.
The full explanation
First, make the area safe
A gate that stops halfway is dangerous in the dark. Someone may not see it, or may try to drive through the gap. Before you work out why it failed, keep people, children, pets and vehicles clear of the gate's path, and turn on the lights.

Eight steps to take
Stay out of the swing or slide path
Never stand between a moving gate and a post, and never reach through the gate.
Look and listen
A continuous alarm usually means the control board senses an obstruction, according to a Mighty Mule manual. Check for a branch, a stone, debris or a vehicle bumper in the path, and check whether the gate is level and plumb.
Check the power
Make sure the operator's power switch and any switches on the control panel are on. Power surges can also cause trouble, according to an installer guide.
Try another control
Press the remote, the keypad and the wall button. If one works, the gate system is fine and the other device is at fault.
Look at the sensors
If a photo eye is tripped, a light typically flashes. Clear branches or debris and wipe dirty lenses. Never tape over or bypass a sensor.
Use the manual release
Find the key, lever or pin your manual describes and release the operator. Move the gate slowly and watch for sagging or binding. A heavy gate can move freely once released.
Secure the opening
If the gate was stuck open, close and latch it by hand if you can. If you cannot, keep the area lit and watched, and do not leave the opening unprotected.
Write down what you see
Note the operator's brand, any flashing lights or beeps and what happened just before. Then call a technician.
The label shows the brand and model, and the lights or beeps point to the fault. A photo helps a technician bring the right parts.
Stuck open or stuck closed: the difference
A gate stuck open leaves your property exposed, so the priority is closing it by hand and latching it. A gate stuck closed can trap a car outside or inside. Use the manual release only when the gate path is clear, and do not tow or push it with a vehicle.
In both cases, leave the operator released until a technician checks it, unless the cause is plain, like a branch you have removed. Re-engage the release as your manual shows.
What to avoid
- Do not force the gate with a car or a tool.
- Do not jump wires or bypass a sensor or alarm. UL 325 requires monitored safety devices, and DASMA says the monitoring must not be defeated in the field.
- Do not remove warning signs or edge sensors.
- Do not stand in the path of a released gate.
- Do not leave the opener in manual and forget it, because the gate then will not run on the remote.
If the gate is on a fire access road
A gate across a fire apparatus access road is held to a higher standard. The California Fire Code, section 503.6, says such a gate must have an approved means of emergency operation and that the gate and that emergency operation must be maintained operational at all times. If your gate has a fire department override, report any failure to your fire district and your technician. See fire access for driveway gates.
When to call
Call a technician if the gate is bent, off its hinges or track, if the operator hums or smells hot, if a sensor keeps tripping or if the gate will not secure. See gate repair and electric gate repair. After the visit, ask the technician to test the manual release, the sensors and the battery so it works next time. See manual release and battery.
