Newer single-family homes and owner-occupied streets
Coachella is a city of about 43,000 people in the eastern Coachella Valley. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 2000, about 71 percent of its 12,683 housing units are single-family detached houses and about 64 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Almost no homes stand vacant.
Homes from around 2000 are now in the years when batteries, sensors, remotes and keypads wear out while hinges and frames are still sound. Mobile homes are about 3 percent of units. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Coachella, so check your own association's rules if you have one.
On a driveway gate we test the operator, the sensors and the remotes first, then look at the hinges, rollers and track.
- Operators and remotes on homes built since 2000
- Swing and sliding gates on single-family lots
- Keypads, sensors, batteries and control boards
Why gates in Coachella stop working
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The gate does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does nothing at all | No power, a tripped breaker or a dead battery | Check power, breaker and battery, then the control board |
| Motor hums, gate does not move | A binding gate, a worn gear or arm, or a failed capacitor | Free the gate, then repair or replace the failed part |
| Gate stops halfway or reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, a safety edge or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors, test the edge, reset the force |
| Gate sags or drags on the ground | Worn hinges, a post that has shifted or a heavy frame | Reset hinges and posts, brace or square the frame |
| Remote works only up close | A weak remote battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery, test the receiver and the range |
| Dead after a power cut | A drained or failed backup battery | Test and replace the battery, check the charger |
Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or damaged.

What the Coachella Valley does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table for Coachella, using 1981-2010 normals, lists a July mean high of 108.1 degrees and a record high of 123 degrees. Rain is only a few inches a year. Heat wears out backup batteries, plastic housings and lubricants, and a sun-baked control box shortens the life of a board.
A High Wind Warning on March 15, 2021 with gusts near 60 mph led the Imperial Irrigation District to report 18 transmission poles down, according to KESQ, with outages in nearby Indio, La Quinta and Mecca. The National Weather Service also warned of gusts to 50 mph and isolated gusts to 65 mph downwind of the San Gorgonio Pass on April 14, 2021. Wind pushes on solid gates, packs sand into tracks and ends in power cuts that test the backup battery.
Before wind season, test the backup battery, wipe the sensors and clear sand from the track.
- Test the backup battery before summer and wind season
- Clear sand and dust from tracks and sensors
- Check hinges and latches after strong wind

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina Β· Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory Β· Google review

Four steps from call to done
You call or send the form
Give us your street or neighborhood and describe what the gate does.
We inspect structure and controls
We free the gate, then test the power supply, the backup battery, the board and the limits.
We agree on the work
You hear the options and the price, and nothing starts until you say yes.
We fix it and test it
We repair or replace the failed part and run the gate through full cycles with every safety device.
What to do while your gate waits for repair
An automatic gate can hurt someone, so until we arrive keep people, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or not closing.
If the gate is stuck open or shut and you must move it, use the manual release the way the maker's instructions say, and never force a gate against its operator.
- Keep people, pets and vehicles away from the gate path
- Do not bypass or unplug the safety sensors
- Photograph the gate and the operator label, and note any blinking codes
Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Coachella
City permits. Coachella's Development Services is at 53990 Enterprise Way, main number (760) 398-3502, and building applications go to buildingservices@coachella.org. The city's hours have changed before, so confirm them on coachella.org before you visit.
The city pages we could read do not say whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule. Call Development Services before a new gate or new electrical work.
Emergency access. Fire and police need a way in. Before you install or change a locked entry, ask the local fire department about key switches and Knox boxes.
HOA review. Many associations review exterior changes such as gates. Check yours before you change a gate's design or color.
UL 325. This safety standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test them before we leave.

Coachella gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Coachella?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Coachella (ZIP 92236) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Coachella?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Coachella means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Coachella?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
The gate is probably binding, or a gear, arm or capacitor has failed. Do not keep running it, because that can burn out the motor. Call us and we free the gate and test the operator.
How much does gate repair cost in Coachella?
It depends on the gate type and the failed part. A remote, battery or sensor costs far less than a control board, an operator or a rebuilt post. We find the fault first, quote the price and start work only after you agree.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Coachella?
Coachella uses ZIP code 92236, which Indio and unincorporated Thermal and Vista Santa Rosa also share, so some 92236 addresses are outside the city. ZIP code 92274 belongs to Thermal. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does wind affect electric gates in Coachella?
The National Weather Service warned of gusts to 50 mph and isolated gusts to 65 mph in the Coachella Valley on April 14, 2021. Wind can push a solid gate off its track or hinges, and sand in a track can stop a sliding gate. We realign the gate, clear the track and test the operator.
Do you serve Indio and Thermal as well?
Indio borders Coachella on the north and west, and Thermal and Mecca are unincorporated communities next to the city. Call us with your address and we will confirm the visit.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Coachella too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Coachella for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
