Older homes, apartments and mobile homes
Montclair is a compact city of about 38,000 residents in San Bernardino County, roughly five and a half square miles. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1969, about 55 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 56 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses.
The same survey counts roughly 22 percent of homes in buildings of five or more units and about 8 percent mobile homes, so many Montclair gates guard shared entries and parking, not a single driveway. Wikipedia and a county history page say the area was citrus orchards until after World War II, and the city incorporated in 1956 as Monte Vista. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Montclair. On a shared gate, the owner or property manager usually decides who calls for a repair.
Whether it is an original gate on a 1960s house or a newer shared entry, we start with the gate itself, then test the operator, sensors and remotes.
- Gates and operators on homes from the 1960s and 1970s
- Shared entries at apartments and condos
- Keypads, remotes and sensors that have aged

What Montclair's climate does to a gate
Montclair has no published weather station of its own. Wikipedia's tables for nearby airports list mean daily highs of 93.7 degrees in July at Chino Airport, about 7 miles south, and 93.8 degrees at Ontario Airport, about 6 miles east. Ontario averages about 11.6 inches of rain a year. Long hot summers age batteries, plastic housings and lubricants.
Wikipedia's Ontario page says Santa Ana winds hit the area frequently in autumn and winter. Gusts push on solid gate panels, blow dust across sensor lenses and can bring down branches onto a driveway, and a power cut leaves an electric gate stuck shut unless the backup battery is healthy.
Wipe sensor lenses, check hinges and latches and test the backup battery twice a year, before summer and before the wind season.
- Test backup batteries before summer
- Keep sensor lenses clean
- Check latches and hinges after strong wind
Why gates in Montclair stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

What customers say

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Montclair
City permits. The City of Montclair handles building permits through its Building Division at City Hall, 5111 Benito Street, and the city's website is cityofmontclair.org. We could not read the city's permit pages directly, and we could not confirm whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so ask the Montclair Building Division before a new gate or new electrical work.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.
Montclair gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Montclair?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Montclair (ZIP 91763) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Montclair?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Montclair means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Montclair?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Montclair?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Montclair?
Montclair's own ZIP code is 91763. The zip-codes.com directory also lists Montclair as an accepted place name for part of ZIP 91710, whose main city is Chino, so some Montclair mail carries that ZIP. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Who arranges a repair for a shared gate at an apartment or condo?
Usually the owner, property manager or association, because they own the gate and decide on repairs. We repair the gate and its operator, and we can work from a work order from the manager.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Montclair too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Montclair for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
