What Pomona's climate does to a gate
Wikipedia's table of NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Pomona/Fairplex station lists mean daily highs of 90.3 degrees in July and 92.4 in August, and about 14.5 inches of rain a year, most of it in winter. Summer heat ages batteries and plastic housings, and winter rain gets into keypads and control boxes.
ABC7 reported that during the powerful Santa Ana winds in January 2022 a tree fell on a Pomona family's home. Strong wind pushes on solid gate panels and can knock down branches onto a driveway, and a power cut can leave an electric gate stuck unless its battery backup works.
Check keypads and control boxes for moisture after a storm, and test the backup battery before summer.

Historic districts, mid-century tracts and renters
Pomona is a city of about 148,000 residents in Los Angeles County. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1967, about 59 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses and about 54 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, which leaves roughly 46 percent renters. About a quarter of homes are in buildings of five or more units.
The city's historic preservation program covers several historic districts, and the city names Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights and Hacienda Park among its residential ones. Phillips Ranch is a name listed for ZIP 91766, and we could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Pomona. Gates on 1960s tract houses, older neighborhood homes and apartment entries all age differently.
From an original hinge on a mid-century house to a shared apartment entry, we look at the gate first and then test the operator, the sensors and the remotes.

Why gates in Pomona stop working
These are the faults we hear about most. The real cause is confirmed on site.
| Symptom | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate stuck open or stuck closed | A failed operator, a locked manual release or a power fault | Use the manual release as the maker directs, then diagnose the operator |
| Gate reverses without touching anything | Dirty photo eyes, a bent bracket or a force setting that is too low | Clean and realign the photo eyes and reset the force |
| Gate swings or slides unevenly | A leaf out of level, worn hinges or a loose track | Level the leaf, replace hinges, tighten the track |
| Clicking sound but no movement | A weak battery or a failed starting capacitor | Test the battery and the capacitor and replace the weak one |
| Solar gate stops after a few cycles | A weak panel, an old battery or shade on the panel | Test the panel and the battery, clean or move the panel |
| Remote or keypad gives no response | Dead batteries, a lost code or a receiver fault | Replace batteries, reprogram the code, test the receiver |
Do not run an operator against a gate that is jammed or dragging.
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Pomona
City permits. Pomona Building and Safety is at City Hall, 505 S. Garey Avenue, phone (909) 620-2371, email Building@pomonaca.gov, with electronic submittals through the city's online portal at pomonaca.gov. We found no Pomona page that mentions gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm whether a gate or its wiring needs a permit. Call Building and Safety before a new gate or new electrical work.
Historic districts and fire service. The city's preservation page defines alterations broadly, including exterior changes, surface paving and new structures. If your home is in a historic district or is a designated landmark, ask the Planning Division before you change a gate. Pomona contracts with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the State Fire Marshal's March 2025 recommended map lists 24 acres of Pomona as Very High, 1,682 acres as High and 451 acres as Moderate.
Fire department access. A locked gate can slow emergency crews. Ask the local fire department what it requires, for example a key switch or Knox box, before you install or change an entry.
Design rules. Planned communities and HOAs can limit gate style, height and color. Ask first, and we can give you a written scope for their review.
Entrapment protection. The UL 325 standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for devices such as photo eyes or contact edges. We test these devices every time we repair an operator.

Pomona gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Pomona?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Pomona (ZIP codes 91766, 91767 and 91768) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Pomona?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Pomona means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Pomona?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
Hum without movement points to a binding gate or a failed capacitor, gear or arm. Keep the operator off, and we free the gate and test the parts.
How much does gate repair cost in Pomona?
A sensor, remote or hinge costs far less than an operator or a rebuilt post. We quote after we see the problem and before we start, so you know the price first.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Pomona?
Pomona's street-delivery ZIP codes are 91766, 91767 and 91768. ZIP 91769 is a PO box ZIP. 91765 and 91789 belong to Diamond Bar and Walnut but carry Pomona as an accepted name, so some mail reaches Pomona from there. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does a gate in a Pomona historic district need extra approval?
Possibly. The city's preservation pages say exterior changes to a home in a historic district, or to a designated landmark, may need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Planning Division. We could not confirm whether gate repair or a new gate counts, so ask the Planning Division before you replace a gate in a district.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Pomona too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Pomona for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
