What Placentia weather does to a gate
Wikipedia calls Placentia's climate warm-summer Mediterranean but gives no temperature table. The third-party site WeatherSpark lists a hot season from about July 1 to September 27, with August the hottest month at an average high of 86 degrees, and February as the wettest month. Summer heat is hard on batteries and plastic parts.
WeatherSpark also reports that winter winds come more from the east, and wind speeds are highest in December. Wind loads a solid gate like a sail and can push a swing gate off its stop. We found no dated wind or outage event for Placentia, so we do not claim one.
In spring, before the heat, test the backup battery, wipe the sensors and check that the gate latches without being pushed.
- Test the backup battery before summer
- Check latches and stops after windy days
- Keep tracks and sensor lenses clean

Mostly single-family homes from the 1970s
Placentia is a small Orange County city. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1976 and about 63.6 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. About 60.2 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses and another 11.3 percent are attached homes, so most gates here guard family driveways.
Wikipedia names several parts of the city: Old Town and the Placentia-Santa Fe District near downtown, the former colonia of La Jolla and the formerly unincorporated Atwood area. It also describes George Key Ranch, a citrus ranch on the National Register of Historic Places that is now a park. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Placentia, so check with your own association before you change a gate.
On a house that is now about fifty years old, the gate, its hinges and its operator are often well worn. We start with the gate itself, then test the electronics and the safety devices.

- Older hinges, rollers and tracks that need adjusting
- Remotes, keypads and sensors that have aged

Why gates in Placentia stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Placentia
City permits. The City of Placentia's Building Division is at City Hall, 401 E. Chapman Avenue, (714) 993-8124, with information at placentia.org. The city's page on work exempt from a permit lists items such as low fences and walls and notes that separate electrical permits are still required unless exempt, but it does not mention gates or gate operators. We could not confirm a gate-specific rule, so call the division before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire service. Placentia formed its own fire department in July 2020, so ask it about key switch or Knox box requirements before you change a locked entry.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Placentia gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Placentia?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Placentia (ZIP 92870) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Placentia?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Placentia means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Placentia?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Placentia?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Placentia?
Placentia homes use ZIP code 92870. ZIP code 92871 is for PO boxes only. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does Placentia have gated communities?
We could not confirm a named gated community in Placentia, and real-estate listings alone are not proof. If your gate belongs to an association, ask it about approved gate styles and who maintains the operator before work starts.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Placentia too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Placentia for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
