Why gates in Anaheim stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

Mid-century homes, apartments and Anaheim Hills estates
Anaheim is the most populous city in Orange County. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1973, about 46.5 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 40.6 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses. About 34.8 percent of units are in buildings of five or more homes, so many Anaheim gates guard shared apartment and condo entries rather than single-family driveways.
The eastern third of the city, Anaheim Hills, was built to a master plan that began in the early 1970s and was marketed with large lots, trails and a golf course, according to Wikipedia. The same page says 23 community associations operate there under the Anaheim Hills Planned Community Association. It does not say which of them are gated, so check your own association's rules before you change a gate.
Whether it is a driveway slider on a 1970s house, a swing gate on a hillside lot or a shared entry gate at an apartment, we start with the gate itself, then test the operator, sensors, keypad and backup battery.

What Anaheim weather does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table, using NOAA 1991-2020 normals, lists mean daily highs of 86.8 degrees in July and 88.8 in August, about 14 inches of rain a year and a record high of 115 degrees on July 6, 2018. Long hot afternoons age gate batteries and plastic parts and dry out lubricants.
Wikipedia says Santa Ana winds are a major factor in fires in Anaheim Hills. During the wind-driven Canyon Fire 2 in October 2017, about 16,570 people in Anaheim, Orange and Tustin were ordered out. A gate that depends on grid power can be stuck shut or open when power is cut, so a healthy backup battery and a known manual release matter. Anaheim runs its own electric utility, Anaheim Public Utilities, and we found no verified outage history for it.
Before the hot months, test the backup battery, wipe the sensor lenses and make sure the manual release moves freely.
- Test the backup battery before summer
- Know where your gate's manual release is
- Wipe sensor lenses and check hinges after wind

I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review
My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Anaheim
City permits. The City of Anaheim's Building Division is at (714) 765-5153, with the permit counter at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Boulevard, Suite 145, and information at anaheim.gov. The city handout we could read on when a permit is required lists block walls over 7 feet and similar work but does not mention gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm whether a gate or its wiring needs a permit. Call the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire hazard zones. Anaheim Municipal Code Chapter 16.40 designates Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and the city says the wildfire threat is real, particularly in east Anaheim. Its wildfire mitigation specialist can be reached at (714) 765-4039. If your gate is in a hill neighborhood, ask the city what applies to your address.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Anaheim gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Anaheim?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Anaheim (ZIP codes 92801, 92802, 92804, 92805, 92806, 92807 and 92808) and the neighborhoods next door. Is there electric gate repair near me in Anaheim?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Anaheim means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Anaheim?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Anaheim?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Anaheim?
We serve the street ZIP codes 92801, 92802, 92804, 92805, 92806, 92807 and 92808. In Anaheim Hills, 92807 covers the western part and 92808 the eastern part. The other Anaheim ZIP codes are PO boxes. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Do you repair gates in Anaheim Hills?
Yes. Anaheim Hills has hillside lots and 23 community associations, according to Wikipedia. On a sloped driveway a gate can drift or strain its operator, and we adjust the gate, the limits and the operator force. Check with your association before changing the look of a gate.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Anaheim too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Anaheim for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
