Old Humboldt Bay houses, from Victorian blocks to small mid-century homes
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Eureka was built in 1954, which is older than the stock in most California cities. About 48 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so slightly more than half of households rent. About 60 percent of the roughly 11,600 homes are detached houses, and the median owner-occupied home value is about $404,500. A door on a house that old has often been repaired more than once, and the original opener, if it is still there; if it is still there, it has lived a long life.
Wikipedia says Eureka was founded in 1850 on the shore of Humboldt Bay and incorporated as a city in 1874. The Carson Mansion, built from 1884 to 1886 at 2nd and M Streets, and Old Town, a National Register historic district of more than 150 buildings, show the Victorian side of the city. We could not verify any named homeowners association in Eureka, so most doors answer to the owner or the landlord alone.
Tell us the cross street, how old the door is and whether the garage is attached or sits apart from the house, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs, and we add a battery backup when an older opener is replaced.

What Eureka weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table, which uses 1991-2020 normals from the Woodley Island station, describes a cool-summer Mediterranean climate. Daily highs run from about 55 degrees in winter to about 64 in August, rainfall is about 40 inches a year, and about 55 percent of possible sunshine reaches the city. The record high is 87 degrees and the record low is 20. Summer fog is common. Damp coastal air is hard on metal parts, so springs, cables, hinges and tracks rust sooner than they do inland, and wood or rubber weatherseal soaks up water.
A wind storm on November 26, 2019 brought winds of about 20 to 50 miles an hour across Humboldt County. In Eureka, according to the Lost Coast Outpost, a tree fell on power lines on Table Bluff Road, a light post fell in a parking lot and part of the Eureka Theater marquee blew off, and thousands of customers lost power across the county. A kymkemp.com report says about 12,000 PG&E customers in Humboldt and Mendocino counties lost power in a high-wind storm in December 2025. We did not verify seasonal wind averages or how often the power goes out in Eureka. The region is also known for earthquakes, including the 1992 Cape Mendocino sequence, a magnitude 6.4 quake near Ferndale on December 20, 2022 and a magnitude 7.0 quake offshore of Cape Mendocino on December 5, 2024. We found no Eureka-specific damage report from the 2024 quake. After a strong shake, doors can go out of alignment, tracks can bend and springs can shift, so have the door checked.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and look for rust on the springs and cable ends. Wipe the bottom seal dry after a long wet spell, and press the test button on the battery backup so the opener still works when the lights go out.
- Check springs and cable ends for rust
- Have the door checked after a strong quake
- Test the battery backup before storm season
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney Β· Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine Β· Google review

Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Eureka is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Eureka, not Humboldt County. The Building Division is part of Development Services at 531 K Street, phone 707-441-4155, email building@eurekaca.gov, with phone hours of 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. There is also an inspection request line at 707-441-4043 that does not call back. Permit applications go through the city's online portal at eurekaca.gov. The city's building page does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a replacement needs a permit. A third-party permit guide says alteration and repair work generally needs a permit unless exempt and does not list garage doors as exempt, but that is not a city statement, so ask the Building Division before the work.
Historic areas. Old Town Eureka is a National Register historic district, and a summary of Eureka's historic preservation chapter says design review in historic areas goes to the Historic Preservation Commission when it applies. We found no garage-door-specific historic rule. If your home is in or near Old Town, ask the city before you change a door. We could not verify any hillside or fire-zone rule for Eureka.

Eureka garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Eureka?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Eureka (ZIP 95501 and 95503) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Eureka?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Eureka?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Eureka?
Eureka homes use ZIP codes 95501 and 95503, according to zip-codes.com. ZIP codes 95502 and 95534 are for PO boxes only. These ZIP codes also cover areas outside the city limits, such as Cutten, Myrtletown, Humboldt Hill, Freshwater and Bayview, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it.
Does a garage door replacement in Eureka need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Eureka, because the city's building page does not mention garage doors. Call the Eureka Building Division at 707-441-4155 and ask whether your door or opener job needs a permit. Homes in or near Old Town may also need design review.
Should I have my garage door checked after an earthquake or wind storm in Eureka?
Yes, if the door sticks, drifts to one side or sounds different. Strong shaking can knock a door out of alignment or bend a track, and a broken or shifted spring is dangerous to lift by hand. Stop using the door and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Eureka?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
