A dense beach city about 40 blocks long
Hermosa Beach covers 1.42 square miles and had 19,728 residents at the 2020 census, about 13,800 per square mile, according to Wikipedia. The same page reports 10,038 housing units, about 92 percent occupied, and Census QuickFacts puts about half of homes as owner-occupied. A third-party housing site that uses Census survey data lists the median year built as 1968, with about 54 percent of homes single-family and 44 percent multi-family.
The city is about 15 blocks wide and 40 blocks long, with the pier at the end of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway through the middle. Real-estate listings describe walk streets, alleys and Strand-front lots, including one group of walk streets between 22nd and 24th Streets with a one-way alley and a garage reached from the courtyard side. Those are listings, not a city rule, but they show why we ask how the garage is reached before we book.
Parking near the pier is described as tight on weekends, so tell us when you call where we can park for the visit. When the garage is the main way into a compact home, a door that will not open is more than a nuisance, so tell us what the door does and we book the soonest visit.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

What Hermosa Beach weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia gives Hermosa Beach mean daily highs of about 76 to 77 degrees in July and August, around 13 inches of rain a year, mostly from late October to late March, and about 325 sunny days. Morning fog, called May Gray and June Gloom, is common in late spring. Mild temperatures are gentle on springs, but fog and rain leave moisture on the bottom seal and on the sensor lenses.
The Beach Cities Health District hazard plan says Santa Ana winds occur mostly from September to May, that Hermosa Beach is not in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone and that it has limited wildland-urban interface. Southern California Edison supplies the power and, according to the plan, gives customers about two days' notice of a planned Public Safety Power Shutoff. We found no Hermosa Beach-specific outage history, so keep the manual release easy to reach and the battery backup working.
On a foggy morning, wipe the two sensor lenses near the floor with a dry cloth and look at the bottom seal. Twice a year, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup.
- Wipe the sensor lenses on foggy mornings
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Check the bottom seal after rain

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Hermosa Beach
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
Hermosa Beach Building and Safety. The Building and Safety Division is at 1315 Valley Drive, phone (310) 318-0235 (Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the city's permit forms). We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule: the city's permit-requirements document lists exempt items such as small accessory buildings and low retaining walls, does not mention garage doors, and planning review may still apply. Ask the division whether your job needs a permit before a replacement.
Fire zone and historic notes. The Beach Cities hazard plan says Hermosa Beach is not in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. We did not verify any historic district or hillside rule for the city.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Hermosa Beach?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Hermosa Beach?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Hermosa Beach?
Hermosa Beach uses ZIP code 90254, which is the only ZIP code for the city. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you service homes on the walk streets and The Strand?
Yes. We serve all of Hermosa Beach. Tell us whether the garage faces a street, an alley or a courtyard and where we can park, because parking near the pier can be tight on weekends.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Hermosa Beach?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Hermosa Beach. Call the city's Building and Safety Division at (310) 318-0235 and ask whether your job needs a permit before a replacement.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a simple job like a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Hermosa Beach?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
