What Manhattan Beach weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia gives Manhattan Beach average highs of about 74 degrees in July and 75 in August, and about 13 inches of rain a year. Ocean breezes keep summers 10 to 20 degrees cooler than inland Southern California. Mild heat is easier on springs and lubricant, but winter rain still settles in the tracks and under the bottom seal.
The Beach Cities Health District hazard plan (2025) says Santa Ana winds occur mostly from September through May and that the area does not typically see severe windstorms, though high winds can bring damage, fallen limbs and power outages. The plan says Southern California Edison usually warns customers about two days before a planned Public Safety Power Shutoff, and that Manhattan Beach is not in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. For a power cut, know where the manual release is and keep the battery backup working.
After a windy spell, wipe dust off the tracks and check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other. Twice a year, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup.
