Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney Β· Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine Β· Google review

A city of single-family houses built mostly before 1970
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey (a 1-year estimate that carries a margin of error), the median home in Los Altos was built in 1964, the oldest stock of the four cities near here. About 82 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and roughly 87 percent of all homes are single-family houses, with only about 4 percent in buildings of 50 or more units. So most garages here belong to a house that one owner has lived with for years, and many doors have been repaired more than once.
Wikipedia says residents incorporated the city in 1952, partly over zoning disputes. Downtown is centered on Main Street, which the main roads bypass, and the old train station on First Street dates from 1913. Wikipedia also records that in 1976 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first 50 Apple I computers in a Los Altos garage. We found no reliable count of Eichler homes in the city, because the sources conflict, so we give none.
Los Altos shares its two main ZIP codes with the separate town of Los Altos Hills, so tell us your street when you call. We weigh and balance each door before we choose springs, and when we replace an older opener we add a battery backup.
- Original springs and rollers on doors from the 1960s
- Two-car doors on ranch and bungalow garages
- Opener replacement with battery backup

What your garage door is telling you in Los Altos
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The door is heavy and will not stay up | A spring has lost tension or broken | Replace the springs as a set and rebalance the door |
| The door jumped off its track | A bent track or a broken roller | Straighten or replace the track, replace rollers, reset the door |
| The opener runs but nothing moves | A stripped gear, broken spring or a disconnected door | Test the opener, repair or replace the failed part |
| The door closes crooked | A stretched or slipped cable | Replace the cable and level the door |
| The remote works only close to the door | A weak battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery and test the receiver |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What Los Altos weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia has no climate table for Los Altos, so we use the table for Moffett Federal Airfield in nearby Mountain View as a stand-in. It puts average daily highs at 75.9 degrees in June and 76.9 in July and August, an annual mean high of 69.3, a record high of 107 and about 16.3 inches of rain a year, almost all from December to March. A weather summary from a third-party site lists the Los Altos record high as 106 degrees. Los Altos sits a little farther from the Bay, so summer highs may run a few degrees warmer, which we could not verify.
The Mountain View Voice reported on March 12, 2025 that during a storm about 433 customers in Los Altos and 126 in Los Altos Hills were without power by mid-morning. When the power goes out, the opener will not lift the door, so know where the manual release cord is. If the door feels very heavy or one side hangs low, a spring or cable may be broken: stop and call us instead of forcing it. We could not verify how often outages happen here.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup. Check the bottom seal for gaps before the rainy months.
- Know where the manual release is
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Check the bottom seal before winter

| Southeast, along Clay Drive and Alexander Way | A real-estate site names a small Eichler tract here called Fallen Leaf Park, built in the late 1960s | Mid-century style doors, where we match the look of the original panels |

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Los Altos
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Los Altos is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Los Altos. The Building Division is at City Hall, 1 N. San Antonio Road, and a city directory seen in search results lists (650) 947-2752, bldpermit@losaltosca.gov and a public counter open Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 5:00. The city site did not open for us, so confirm the number and hours. We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule, so call the Building Division before a replacement or an opener swap.
Fire zones. The city published a 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone map for review. A March 2025 city presentation by the county fire department, seen in a search summary, describes only a small part of Los Altos neighborhoods as High or Moderate zones. We could not verify the boundaries, so check your address with the city. Los Altos Hills is a different town with its own fire map.

Los Altos garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Los Altos?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Los Altos (ZIP 94022 and 94024) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Los Altos?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Los Altos?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Los Altos?
Los Altos homes use ZIP codes 94022 and 94024, according to zip-codes.com. Both ZIP codes also cover the town of Los Altos Hills, and 94023 is for PO boxes only. Call us with your street and we confirm we reach it. We also serve Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino.
Does a garage door replacement in Los Altos need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Los Altos, because we found no city page on garage doors. Call the Los Altos Building Division at (650) 947-2752 to ask whether your door or opener work needs a permit, and confirm that number with the city first.
Does a power outage stop my Los Altos garage door from opening?
An opener without a battery backup will not lift the door during an outage. Pull the red release cord to lift the door by hand only if it moves freely. If it feels very heavy, a spring or cable may be broken, and you should call us instead. A battery backup keeps the opener working, and California Health and Safety Code 19892 covers that on new installs.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Los Altos?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
