Mostly single-family houses, and most of them from the 1950s
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year estimates, Norwalk has about 27,200 housing units and the median home was built in 1957. About 72 percent are detached single-family houses, and about two thirds of occupied homes are owner-occupied. This is a homeowner city of tract-era houses, so most of the calls we expect here are a broken spring, a worn opener or a door that has started to jam.
With a median build year of 1957, the springs, rollers and openers on many Norwalk doors have had decades to wear. We check the whole door when we come, not only the part you called about, and we measure the opening before we order a new door. About 18 percent of units are in buildings of five or more units, so we also work with landlords and managers.
Norwalk was incorporated on August 26, 1957 under a council-manager charter, and the land was part of Rancho Los Nietos, granted in 1784. The Norwalk Town Square sign was completed in 1954, Cerritos College opened in 1955, and Firestone Boulevard, Pioneer Boulevard, Imperial Highway and Rosecrans Avenue are among the main streets.

What heat and power cuts do to a Norwalk garage door
Norwalk has no weather table of its own in our sources, so we use two stations nearby and call it southeast Los Angeles County. The Whittier station's 1971-2000 normals show average highs near 84 degrees in June and 89 in July and August, a record of 113 degrees and about 14 inches of rain a year. Long Beach Airport's 1991-2020 normals are cooler, with about 76 degrees in June and 83 in August. Heat dries out lubricant, and February rain settles into tracks and bottom seals.
On December 24, 2024, a transformer failure at a Southern California Edison substation in the Downey and Norwalk area left more than 31,000 customers without power, according to ABC7. Norwalk was one of the two core areas, and Fox LA's headline that day was about Norwalk and Downey residents and businesses without power on Christmas Eve. If your opener has no battery backup, the door will not lift in a blackout, so find the manual-release cord and practice with the door closed.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and press the test button on the battery backup. Check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other.
- Oil rollers and hinges before the hot months
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Check the bottom seal after heavy rain

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review

Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
Norwalk permits. Norwalk is its own city, so its Building and Safety Division sets the permit rules, not Los Angeles. The division's phone number is (562) 929-5733 and the email is building@norwalkca.gov. A third-party listing puts it at City Hall, Room 12, 12700 Norwalk Boulevard, so confirm the address when you call. The city's permit page says you can book a permit technician appointment on weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and that applicants must follow CALGreen and Chapter 8.48 of the municipal code. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or a new opener needs a permit, so ask the city before a replacement. See norwalk.org.

Norwalk garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Norwalk?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Norwalk (ZIP 90650) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Norwalk?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Norwalk?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Norwalk?
Norwalk uses street-delivery ZIP code 90650. ZIP codes 90651 and 90652 are PO-box-only and sit inside 90650. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement need a permit in Norwalk?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Norwalk. The city sets its own rules, so ask Building and Safety at (562) 929-5733 before a replacement or a new opener.
My garage door is stuck shut after a power outage in Norwalk. What do I do?
Pull the red manual-release cord with the door closed, then lift the door by hand. Springs hold most of the weight, but a broken spring makes it far heavier, so stop if it does not move easily and call us. An opener with a battery backup, required on new openers in California, will lift the door during an outage.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a simple job like a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Norwalk?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
